swapping magnets etc. (new guy)

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I have a couple of questions regarding swapping out magnets in humbuckers. I have a custom sh-5 and a sh-11. I've been looking around the forum and it looks like swapping for a A5 magnet might sound interesting. My concern is...1, where do i find these magnets, and 2, how do i swap out magnets?

I currently have a les paul with 500k pots. Next time i swap out pickups I plan on disabling my tone pots...i just never use them.

Thanks for the advice.

I get my magnets from Wymore Guitars.com. Good prices & great service. You best bet is to get a few different kinds. If you have a few guitars, get the $50 minimum to get free shipping.

You'll potentially have an extra A2 & ceramic if you pull them. I highly recommend several A4's, as they are very good in either bridge or neck position; they're brighter than an A2, but warmer than an A5. A few extra A5's would be useful with their scooped mids. A couple A3's (like an A2 but with a little more treble), and a high-powered A8 or two. Get an assortment like this, and you're ready to tweak any of your current (or future) guitars.

There's instruction online about swapping magnets, and plenty of old threads here. It's easy, a 10 or 15 minute job. Try it first on a cheap Asian PU if you can.

Tone pots shape the sound, even if you never turn them up or down; the signal is filtered through them. Disconnecting them will change your EQ, which may be an improvement, or it may not be. That's up to you. If you disconnect them, then what...are they there just for looks?

BTW, in a typical passive guitar configuration, the tone potentiometer does change the sound (slightly), even when it is at 10.
