Swapping magnets... where to buy?

Gonna try a ceramic in my CC making it a Custom. Where can I order the magnets? Ebay? I ran a search but most results were descriptions on how to actually swap the magnets, rather than where to get them.

What does everyone do? Do you guys normally swap magnets in existing pickups that you already own?

Re: Swapping magnets... where to buy?

Yes, we swap magnets on existing PU's, much easier and cheaper than winding a PU from scratch ourselves. Start with a good American or European PU and decide if you need to move the EQ in another direction (don't waste your time tweaking Asian PU's, which are muddy-sounding to begin with). If your PU is in the ballpark ohm-wise, a lot of times this will give you the tone you want. Doesn't always give a better tone, but it's much better to spend $5 on a magnet than $100 on a PU. You never know how a PU will sound in your particular piece of wood, and magnets are a life-saver if you're not independently wealthy.

Check old threads on this forum for discussions & instructions. Search for A4 or A3 and you should find plenty of stuff. Takes 10-15 minutes to swap a magnet, and half of that is de-tuning & re-tuning (don't cut your strings).

Wymore gives free shipping on $50 orders, so maybe you should get a variety, a few of each, so you don't have to wait for another one to arrive & pay shipping again.

Ask questions, we'll help you out.

Sorry to hijack here for a minute, but without one of those...polarity meters (the proper name seems to have escaped me) how would one be able to tell the positive and negative sides of the magnets?

I'd like to attempt this myself, but I don't think I could afford one of those meters in addition to a few magnets.

magnets don't have positive and negative sides, they have north and south sides, which are arbitrary names anyways, but still...

Slip the old magnet out halfway, put the new magnet next to it side to side, if it attracts keep that orientation, if it repels turn the new magnet around till it attracts and you're good to go.

+1. Very simple. I've swapped dozens of magnets, don't have a polarity tester, and never got one backwards.
