switch from active emg to passive or live wires??

I have a ec1000 I'm looking to ditch the emg sand go with a jb and a 59 my favorite set. I know to do that I would need 3 passive pots and a duncan set. and also need to pull the tailpiece stud and drill a hole for a ground wire. will the guitar still sound? or will it be completely silent. is the ground just for safety to not get shocked?
I know I could also get a ec1000 with Duncan's I want anyways but trying to work with what I have sort of for 200 bucks or less.
the Dave Mustain live wires are supposed to be a jb jazz set. when it says that just how close is it I'm very picky any thing that isn't a jb I pretty much don't like in my last 30 guitars.

the livewires wouldn't require any real labor to put in they just plug in like emg connector? is that right? I also hear you need a ground for duncan actives but what if I didnt? I'm not that concerned of shock age I play an hour a week at my house so not bad.

SD Blackouts and Live Wire II series pickups can use the existing EMG Quik Connect wiring harness. (The earlier mk1 18v Live Wire pickups are not compatible.)

For electric guitars with 9v active pickups, the bridge grounding wire seems to be a matter of opinion. SD says yes. EMG says no. I have guitars that adopt each approach. Neither has ever presented any problems.

Another option is Fishman Fluence active humbuckers.

my emg pots are hardwired I know they make the plug ins for the whole thing. but all emg made in the last 10 years or so have the quick connects on the pickups them self right?
the picture I seen seemed to be hardwired for the live wires. I'd much prefer to use the jb and 59 but I wish they made a pre wired harness with the pots and all already soldered.

You can get a wired harness from many sources. RS Guitarworks makes a really nice harness with quality pots and caps.

Wired harnesses are available out there, but it is a good time to learn how to solder your own. There isn't much to it, and you will have a cool skill.

yes I've changed 10 or so pickups before and replaced a few jacks and switches but that's not bit overwhelming I've done the opposite with emg before but that was all plug in play and even then took me 8 hours or so.

I looked but they don't have one for my 3 pot setup. and 80 bucks is a bit insane I think. with passive will I still get sound with no bridge ground?

Re: switch from active emg to passive or live wires??

The DM LiveWires aren't exactly a JB/Jazz set. They have a similar voicing and resonant peak, but they are a little tighter, a little meatier and a little hotter overall. They do NOT use the quick-connector setup like EMGs and come with 100K pots, not 25K like EMG/Blackouts use.

Honestly, if you're truly THAT picky about getting the perfect JB sound, there's only one way to go...an actual JB.

But if you want something close that'll give you all the benefits of actives with a more passive-like feel than even Blackouts can provide, the DM LiveWire set is awesome.

Dave likes 'em ;)

Re: switch from active emg to passive or live wires??

DM Livewires are my favorite humbucker pickups. I used to have EMG 707s in a cheaper guitar and i did not like them because they always seemed a bit sterile to me. I found i'd get bored playing them after 10min because of lack dimension and limited/specific response. haven't tried blackouts (yet), though.

A lot of rhythm metal player seem to like EMGs. I've liked tones i've heard other players get out of them but for whatever reason, they never geled with me or responded well to my personal dynamics.
