Tab Benoit Gear

I was looking at the Tab Benoit site after wondering what amps he uses. He uses a Twin Reverb and a Super Reverb. He recorded Nice and Warm with a Matchless 30 head. It also says that he A/B's the TR and SR for stage use.

I was expecting to see more boutique stuff listed among his amps. He gets such nice gritty sound that I was suprised to see the Fenders listed.

He uses no effects. Cool. Tab is cool blues player.

Any Tab fans here? I haven't seen him live. How does his live sound compare to his recordings?

Never seen him live but, keep in mind...Tab uses Thinline Tele's with buckers...those will drive a Super to a mild crunch much faster ans easier that a Strat. He uses the Twin for cleans and the Super for overdriven tones.

I would have guessed he played a strat or Tele on his older stuff and that the newer stuff with the Thinline tele. Wow, that thineline tele that he plays sure sounds good. I wonder how he'd sound with a JV strat. Just not as crunchy?

Those Thinline Teles have a very signature tone...Jonny Lang alsu uses them, and IMO also gets a cool tone. It looks like he might actually run both amps at the same time, which woiuld get a very big sound.

Even stock they are pretty good...to be honest even the pickups arn't too bad. There are "better" pickups you could get for it, Duncan, and Fralin I know make a replacement Fender Tele Humbucker that is supposed to be closer to the vintage early 70's ones Fender made, but I have not tired them. But I have played the 72 reissue and like I said...even stock I was impressed. They are nothing like a "real" tele in tone, but they are cool none the less.

How would you get that Tab Benoit vibe with a JV strat? What pickups would get me there? I have been listening to the newest Tab Benoit CD today "Fever for the Bayou". He's got the vibe/tone/sound/whatever I want. Can a strat get close with the right SD pups in it? Perhaps a HSS lineup with the right bridge?

no...that tone is a combo if BF FEnder amps, Fender Humbuckers and a semi hollow body...fender humbuckers in your JV would be close but still not very close IMO...just save and get another guitar!

Even if it takes a long time you will be far happier with 2 guitars that sound good than with one guitar that you tried to make the "all in one axe" because it just won't sound as good.

Good advice Christian. I'll start saving. Currently for an amp then 2 more SD pickups for the JV strat, then a Thinline Tele.

I'll just add that you don't necessarily have to buy the same equipment to cop someone's tone, but rather, you can glean as much as possible from their playing, then adapt it to your own equipment

Thanks Curly. That's very gentle reminder thanks. You always have good stuff to add. Listening to Tab I would have sworn he was playing single coil guitar Tele or strat. I would have never guesses he was playing a humbucker equiped guitar. Perhaps, what fooled me was his playing style as much as anything. He has a very bluesy style consistent with the strat players like Buddy Guy or Jimmie Vaughan but with a bit more overdrive. I try to learn from everyone I listen. but, some times they confuse me
