TAD Tonebone TB-PH/2, TB-TH/2 6L6/5881 to EL34 conversion

Re: TAD Tonebone TB-PH/2, TB-TH/2 6L6/5881 to EL34 conversion

Not yet, but planning to...

Though I´m not sure how you mean the question (or if we mean teh same product), the tonebones are EL84 tubes with a special socket designed to replace 5881/6l6/el34 and similar tubes, converting the amp to Class A in the process. But not to convert an EL34 amp to 6l6 or vice versa as the title implies....

^^ yes, we mean the same thing :)

-> you can use a pair of EL34 instead of 6L6 / 5881 tubes,

imo a nice alternative to attenuators.
keep the amp, just use a set of 'home-tubes' on the tad sockets
and a set of 'gig-tubes' ;)

i think of putting it into my engl

is it wise to convert 5881 to EL34s ? most techs would tell me to stick with 5881

a good point.

perhaps i should go for a real attenuator instead

The tube heater on a EL-34 (And real KT-66) takes 1.3A to heat up, whilst the tube heater on a 5881 or 6L6 only takes 0.8A.

On the EL-34, the wiring under the tube socket is also different utilizing one of the pins that is not used with the 6L6 tubes.

Changing the resistors and capacitors under those tube sockets is not a big deal, however that heater ampage draw is a lot and has been known to burn out power transformers. (e.g., 1.3 X 2 = 2.6 verses 0.8 X 2 = 1.6 and that's only for two power tubes)

If the amp was designed around 6L6 tubes and this swap was not originally "provided for", it will likely need to be modded to do this, and of course rebiased. EL34s use a pin that is disconnected on a 6L6, and draw a much higher current....

Just to clarify, this is in no way what the tonebones are designed to do... the TAD Tonebones are essentially the same thing (as far as purpose) as THD Yellowjackets. ;)

i know, but did anybody try them out?
any positive feedback?

not even one report on harmony central :-\
