Take a Charvel from 80's metal to blues!

I have a So Cal Charvel with SD Super Distortion 6 I believe.
I'd like to adapt the guitar so I could play softer blues.

Should I get a custom HSS pickguard made and install single coils or would there be option in the humbucker realms?

No budget.

Do you have a link to the guitar? There is no “Duncan Super Distortion 6”. Does it have the Duncan Distortion set?

Since the Charvels are under Fender ownership and manufacture, I think a standard Strat pickguard will fit. I also think your body is routed HSH meaning basically any pickup combo would fit.

Secondly, the only real difference between a blues guitar and a metal guitar is the guy (or girl) playing it. That being said, I can see why you might want to move away from the Distortion set.

There are a ton of cool combos available, do you want HH, HSS or something else? If singles do you want noiseless or do you not care?

You meant SD Distortion. Super Distortion is Dimarzio's. Swapping pickups is an option. CC or PG in the bridge and PG or Phat Cat in the neck would be great.

Another option is giving the existing HBs parallel and split mode. This is what a friend of mine does to his LP with Invader - Distribution combo. It works for him.

No need for custom pick guard

But this is definitely a Pickup swap situation.

If you want fat sweet blues, get an A2P
If you want more cutting Texas style, get a Pearly Gates
If you want P90 style - get a Phat Cat

If you want Single coil tones, get a higher output hum bucker like a Custom Custom and split it.

Yes, you don't have to switch pickup styles to single coils, you just need vintage output pickups. The rest is technique and learning to use your amp as well as your guitar (and a whole lot of listening to other great bues players).

Some Charvels have shallow pickup routs, so be careful not to buy a pickup that is too tall to fit.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if I’m not mistaken the short leg baseplates should fit all routes but the long leg are usually for a LP or guitar with a deeper route.

Yeah - but I was playing #1 last night (with a Distortion) and no amount of volume takes that to the Blues decently. Maybe some seriously biting Chicago style....but even then it wouldn't be satisfying. JB - sure. Distortion, nope.

But as you mentioned....that guitar volume knob is amazing. More people should try it!
