Talk to me about speakers & cabs

Looking for thoughts & ideas,

I have a 4x10 cab loaded with celestion g10's & a 2x12 cab with a couple of cheapo eminence speakers in it.

I also have a small 5 watt bad cat combo loaded with a celestion v30. It's too small a cab for the speaker & suffers for it. I was thinking of taking this v30 out getting another & loading my 2x12 with both of them.

But this is probably way overkill for my needs.

So I was also thinking of selling the 2x12, building an oversized 1x12 with the same width & depth dimensions as the 4x10 so it can sit underneath & load it with the v30.

This would now leave me with an unloaded 5 watt combo, do I convert/rebuild it into a 1x10 (which is my preferred choice) so its a nice grab & go for practicing/playing along with the stereo/quietish jams,
Thinking of using a 10" celestion gold or greenback

Or is a small cabinet just not ever going to sound good & I'd be better off converting it into a head?

Re: Talk to me about speakers & cabs

I'll let better minds than mine field this one but from experience, speakers make THE MOST difference in your tone than any other part of your signal chain. For realz.

Re: Talk to me about speakers & cabs

I would convert it to a head if it was me.

What are the dimensions and materials used in your current 2x12? The G12H30 is a popular and proven mate to a vintage 30 so that would be chance to do that.

If you want a fairly light weight and compact 1x12 using the V30 that sounds huge, make one 25" wide, by 18" tall, by 11" deep. Use 1/2" birch ply. Use a back panel that leaves a 2" opening across the full width, either on top or on bottom. Off set the speaker slightly to the left or right of center.

What are the dimensions of the 4x10?

Thanks for the reply, I'm leaning towards the 1x12 tbh for space, matching the 4x10 & cost reasons.

I thought a 4x10 & 2x12 in stereo would sound incredible, but the times I'd use such a rig is pretty rare (to non existent)

Marshall 4x10 24"x 24"x 12 1/4"

Laney 2x12 (vc30 style) 19 3/4" x 26 1/4" x 11 1/2" (birch ply I think??)

If I were to make a 1x12 I'd make it to pair the 4x10 so:

24" x 18" x 12 1/4" if this would work?

I can still use a back panel that leaves a 2" opening across the full width & off set the speaker slightly if this is beneficial

In all honesty I have a 2x12 cab that I'm not really loving & I'd let go if without much persuading, & a potential v30 kicking around.

I dont play live but occasionally jam.

If I made a nice 1x12 I could use it at home, mic it for recording & with the 4x10 make a nice mini stack or stereo rig if I did need this.

I guess one of the questions I'm asking in a convoluted way is do I really need a 2x12

That should work fine.

Re: Talk to me about speakers & cabs

Look at the Jet City 1x12
It comes with a 16 ohm Eminence speaker
Has a emulated mic/line out
Is convertible from closed to open to tuned (semi open)
They are oversized and sturdy made
And $149 at MF

They were on sale for $119

Awesome for the price

Oh and they have a thru Jack for your 4x10

I'm not looking to buy a 1x12 as I already have a speaker. I'm looking to either upgrade my 2x12 speakers or build an oversized 1x12 for the v30 I already have.

I'm sure it's a great cab but not what I'm asking about

Re: Talk to me about speakers & cabs

No worries, just want to try to keep thread on topic.

Or before we know it someone will be suggesting I get a vintage leslie cabinet & dumble head to pair with my 4x10

Oh yeah

But you see I was I the same position as you
I wanted a cab
I had a speaker

And I wanted the convertible cab
When I went searching
I found the one I listed

When it was on sale it was cheaper than buying an unloaded cab
And it had those other features

I use mine for trying speakers now
Because it has so much room

Once I settle on one
I plan to Ebay all the random other speakers I have around

I tried car speaker cab
Where I took a 12 inch woofer box and put a 1/4 inch Jack in back

It sounds like a closed back cabinet
It was 30 bucks plus the handle and grill and feet

Around 50 bucks plus the speaker
Which was another 50 bucks

Just putting it out there to consider

You can probably offload the Jet City Eminence for a couple of bucks

Not trying to stray off topic

I'll be quiet now
