Talk to me about the DS1, or similar ODs

In the same range, there's also the RAT and.... er... I don't know which others. But I'm GASing bad for something similar that I can later mod for more gain, so I could use it for the clean channels on some amps. I want a tone that's organic, not too sterile, and quite clear, though the rest of my rig is pretty clear already. I want enough gain to play heavy metal, but not er... well not THAT much gain. Metallica like is enough. My budget is also sub 60USD shipped here, so it has to be modable to achieve this goals. Shoot! Thanks guys

I use a few DS1's a lot..... over the years i have bought a few of them... i have an early 80's one and a new one and they sound the same to me... some say the early ones sound better but i hear no difference... My 80's Roland GP8 multi FX rack unit has a DS1 circuit in it too.... I use the DS1 for souped up hard rock tones but thru smaller combos...

my DS1 is my main rythym tone on my pedalboard that i use with my Fender Deluxe and my Peavey C30 amps...

pedalboard is
guitar -Wah- Boss Line Selector pedal -loop A-DS1(rythym)- loop B Dano Fab Tone-(solos)- out of the Line selector to Boss Chorus and Ibenaz Delay..

Pedalboard is run into the amps clean channel and when i want a clean sound i turn off the DS1 or the Fabtone depending on where the Line selector is...
