Talk to me about the P-Rails neck pickup

I'm highly contemplating taking my very first guitar, my recently re-acquired Ibanez GRX 40, and turning it into a GRX 20. The GRX 40 is set up HSS, while the GRX 20 is HH.

I'm thinking about going with my Crazy 8 in the bridge and a P-Rails in the neck with a 5-way super switch. The Positions are as follows:

1. Neck - Series
2. Neck - P-90
3. Neck series and Bridge series, in parallel (like the middle position of a Les Paul)
4. Neck - rail and bridge inside coil, in parallel
5. Bridge - Series

What do you guys think about that? It's an older Fender switching scheme for a Double Fat Strat. I think this would be the best way to use the whole pickup in the most useful ways.

Thanks.

This sounds like it could really work. When you have it done, I'd love to see pics and hear a review- I am curious about that combo.

Re: Talk to me about the P-Rails neck pickup

I have a P-Rails / P-Rails Hot pair in a PRS SE Semi-Hollow. I find the series and P90 modes excellent, the parallel coils mode usable and the Rail mode disappointing.

Rail mode is not very Stratty. Neither, for that matter, is half of a humbucker.

More than once, Frank Falbo has weighed in to threads about the P-Rails to emphasise that the P90 aspect was the design priority.

Re: Talk to me about the P-Rails neck pickup

I was not a fan of the Rail coil either, but the other modes worked well in the guitar I had. My guess is that there were many ideas tried for the rail coil, and this was the best that worked with the other modes.

Ditto on the rail on its own. Most of the time, I use my P-Rails ES335 in P90 mode (the reason I installed them: P90s with benefits). In reference to the original selector scheme, the neck series has always proven a little thick/bassy for my tastes - if my amp is EQd for P90, the series is just too much, and if I EQ for series, the P90 loses its oomph.

Re: Talk to me about the P-Rails neck pickup

It reminds me of the sound of 2 single coils in series, which is a stock wiring scheme on my Strat. It isn't something I think I have ever intentionally used, other than thinking my tone knob was down halfway or my amp was set wrong.

Yup, on my Tele Deluxe, I have S1 for series middle and it's similar. Too thick for my tastes.
