Okay, I'm thinking of possibly upgrading from my Vibrolux to a Vibro King. Anyone out there own one, or have experience with this amp? what's a good secondhand price at the moment?

I have never played one, but there is one at the local shop that is new (been there for 1 1/2 years i think) for $999.

I owned one for a while. Didn't like it.
It's a little like plugging into a stand alone Fender reverb unit then plugging that into the front of a non-reverb Fender amp.
I've always felt that the stand alone Fender Reverb unit eats up a little of the guitar signal. The reverb of the Vibro King does the same thing.
I found that when I plugged my guitar into the BACK of the Vibro King and bypassed the reverb that it sunded alot better.
Also, the cabinet is cheaply made.
A friend of mine picked up his Vibro King by the handle on top and the whole top tore loose. Fender gave him a new cabinet...but still. :smack:
These amps got rave reviews when they first came out...I don't know why.
But some players do like them. Pete Townshend for one.
Those that use a 6V6 tube as the reverb driver are MUCH MUCH more dependable than the early version with an EL 84.

Interesting, Lew. Now I press myself to remember, the feel of the Vibro King I played many years ago was a little different to that of other fenders. Probably a lot to do with the routing of the reverb.

I just picked one up a couple of months ago, and it's a terrific amp. The guys in my band all agree that it sounds about 100 times better than my Mark IV. these guys have a lot of info. One great tip I read was a way to get power tube overdrive from the Vibro-King: turn the EQ (Treble, Mid, Bass) all down to Zero and crank the Volume to 10. Then just slightly turn up the EQ controls, to 1 each (give or take). Voilà, overdrive at a reasonable volume. I had been in the market for a Fender amp for a long time, and I didn't feel like I could do any better than this without shelling out major $$$ for a vintage model. Plus, I really like the fact that it's PTP construction (like classic Fender amps), to me it seems like if I take care of it it'll last a long, long time (like classic Fender amps!).
