Tapped sound of SSL-3,4&5?

Well has anyone used any of these tapped yet? How do they sound compared to SSL-1s?

I have a tapped SSL-3 that's going in the bridge position on a push pull pot, but I haven't installed it yet.

every comment I've seen from those who've tried a tapped version has been positive though

I have a pair of tapped QP's. (SSL-4's) In the tapped mode, they have the classic single-coil tone of the SSL-1. Full-on, they take on their own character.

I would never buy another single coil pup that wasn't tapped. (New, that is. Used and cheap is another matter.) Its a lot of versatility for the price of a switch.

So do they really sound like a SSL1 or slightly different with their own character? Because what Artie said would mean that a tapped pup includes an SSL-1 for just some bucks more...

try looking at the specs ..

I think what Artie was saying was that the tapped output is similar in tone (if not actual output) to an SSL-1

When looking at the specs i'd say they are equal output wise rather that tone wise...

The SSL-4 tapped, and the SSL-1 are pretty close, but let me make a short clip just to be sure. Thing is, it'll take me a little time because I just rewired my Strat yesterday to eliminate the SSL-1 by itself. (To try something new.)

I'll post a clip as soon as I put it back. (Probably, a little later tonight.)

Times like this, I wish I was a better guitarist. :yell:

Anyway, its a few chords, and then a few notes of the SSL-1 and SSL-4.
Approximately the first 30 seconds is the SSL-1 in the middle position of an alder bodied Strat. The second 30 seconds is the SSL-4 (tapped) in the middle position of a basswood bodied Tele.

And keep in mind, the SSL-1 is staggered, and the SSL-4 is flat.

I think the SSL-1 has just a bit more "chime" on the top end.

Thanks very much... it seems like it's like you said, the ssl-1 has a bit more high end, bu this may also be due to the strat/tele difference... but anyway, you've been a great help once again artie, thanks
