Re: Tappers!

I leave the pick as usual between my thumb and index, and tap with my middle finger.

Re: Tappers!

Depends on how much tapping I'm doing. If it's a quick tap harmonic or tap and slide, then the middle finger. If I'm going off on a wild tapping frenzy, then the index finger.

Re: Tappers!

index finger ala Ed.

i find it more accurate to hold the neck with my other fingers as Ed does while tapping with the index.
then again maybe it has just become habit cause i used to want to be so much like him and i made my technique like his. I even tremolo pick like he does, doing that wild hand faning thing, people see me do it and freak out.

maybe i should start a thread with that, "how do you tremolo pick?"

I went through the same phase and do that tremolo picking too. It's a lot easier with a thin pick though. Not so easy with a heavy or extra heavy which I use now. I hold the pick the same way he does when doing it (middle finger/thumb).

funny isnt it???

i wanted so much to be like Ed that i figured if i do everything like him i will sound like him. the truth is that it did work for a while, but then again how much do you want to sound like him and not have any identity whatsoever of yourself as a player.
i can actually do it with any kinda pick, its more a technique thing. But i also learned to do tremolo picking the good old fashioned Gary Moore way cause it helps with your alternate picking, at least i think so.

Yup, know what you mean. I even went so far as building a guitar with the pickups mounted to the wood :) and I had a 5150 head to boot but stupidly traded it off for a POS Blue DooDoo that I happily sold. Once I started really playing with other people, my own style started coming out of me and getting defined. I didn't tap near as much as I would sitting at home. People told me I had a good combination of the EVH style but in my own way that they enjoyed it. That made me feel good.
My trem picking has gotten rusty. I was doing it the other night on my Kramer and realized how sloppy it's gotten. I'm trying to get it cleaner and using a medium to medium/heavy pick. Time to practice some more. :)
