Tapping Technique

Just wanted to see what tapping technique (right hand) you use and why? Steve Vai says to pull off the string towards the floor/down. When I watch EVH, it looks as if he's going up/towards the roof. I suspect that down might make muting with the left hand easier, but can still be done if you go upwards by having your index finger slightly touching the string above it?

I feel a lot more comfortable plucking slightly upwards, and get a better tone too. Going downwards for me sounds crappy. What do you use?

Thanks!

Re: Tapping Technique

I do it down, or back, towards the bridge.

Re: Tapping Technique

To me, it seems that the best way to do it is to learn both methods and apply them when necessary. For example, if you're on the high e string, it doesn't make much sense to pull down towards the ground now does it?

Do what you gotta do.

Re: Tapping Technique

Depends what you want to achieve. For one finger tapping, like in Eruption, I just flick my finger off the string towards the floor, mostly using my wrist (larger muscle group), because it's easier to work with gravity.

For multiple finger tapping, it's a different approach. I rotate my hand so it's basically fretting the neck like a reverse version of my left hand, and use my fingers as I do with the left.

Re: Tapping Technique

Closing the finger in toward yourself, is more natural as its what your hand wants to do. Hold your hand out limp in front of you and you'll see your fingers naturally want to close in on themselves. You also have more strength this way too. Simple classical pedagogy.

Very cool.
I was watching EVH again, and it definitely looks like his hand is pulling the finger closed. Seems like a more economical way? :)
