Tech 21 Power Engine 60?

Anyone have any experience using this totally clean (with no pre-amp) power amp as a platform for emulation/simulation pre-amp type pedals?

Thinking of Tech 21 Blonde, Wampler '57 Tweed, Wampler Black '65, Boss FBM-1, Boss FDR-1, JOYO American Sound, JOYO British Sound, or others that were designed for such a purpose (not that they can't function used with a guitar amp).

Like to hear about your first-hand experiences, good or bad. Is this method better than through a guitar amp? BTW, I'm not much of a fan of the multi-effect types...I own and never use a DigiTech RP355.

I'd like to hear something about these, too. Also, there are better-sounding multi-effect and modeling products than the RP floor-type DigiTechs. I've had several of those, of various generations going back to the RP5, and while they've all been nicely put together and very reliable, I just always ended up not happy with the sound.

They are perfect for modeling stuff and using preamps. It is a clean, neutral power amp. Wish I still had mine.

That's been my experience exactly! Close, but not quite.

This.

I had played a couple when considering going Boss/Line6 floorboard and powered speaker. Really quite good.

Kind of like a flat studio reference monitor except 60 watt guitar size.

I heard two daisey chained in a store once and LOUD! All model stuff always sounds better in phones IMO, and this really brings that sound out.

Re: Tech 21 Power Engine 60?

I had one before I reverted back to an all analog rig. I used it with a Boss GT-10 modeler, and it was the best at reproducing the modeled sounds of the GT-10

Re: Tech 21 Power Engine 60?

I use my tech 21 oxford pedal and tech 21 vt bass pedal for most of my recordings and think they sound the best in that pricerange with IR/impulses

I do like real tube amps a lot more, I would not want to put em through a power engine 60 and know I prefer tube amps more. the tech 21 pedals really have their own tone that is different than tube amps.

ALL TUBE ALL THE WAY!!! :headbang:

And what was your "first-hand experience with the Tech 21 Power Engine 60"? I've already tried these pedals with my tube amps and know those results.

you did not state in your original post that you " already tried these pedals with my tube amps and know those results"

:(

I use these pedals with cabinet IR impulse modeling and NOT in front of tube amps. You did not state how you run your tube amps, but these pedals are designed to be models of tube amps and not to drive a tube amp. maybe you are aware of that issue...

Doug in this video states "the power engine 60 was designed to be the perfect complement to these character series pedals".

Yeah, the character pedals in front of anything but a tube poweramp (iow, something with no preamp character whatsoever) will not sound right.

Or in front of a recording rig.

:( No I didn't because I clearly asked for first hand experiences with the Tech 21 Power Engine 60

You did not state how you run your tube amps, but these pedals are designed to be models of tube amps and not to drive a tube amp. maybe you are aware of that issue...Some do claim that...others, including some of the manufactures of these various pedals claim they can effectively be used either way. In any event, this isn't my question as I've already tried it and know the results (which BTW weren't bad at all IMO.)

Doug in this video states "the power engine 60 was designed to be the perfect complement to these character series pedals". Thanks, I've watched his series of videos and find them useful. I just would like to hear from others who have either owned one, tested one, had a friend with one, or...you get the idea. I've been mislead by video demos at times in the past.

Yeah, the character pedals in front of anything but a tube poweramp (iow, something with no preamp character whatsoever) will not sound right. Obviously Tech 21 disagrees since they make some of the aforementioned pedals and the pwr. engine both, Why do you conclude this?

Or in front of a recording rig. I have no intention of recording, so this is not part of my concern.
Thanks to All with their first-hand experiences :bigthumb:

Re: Tech 21 Power Engine 60?

dude why'd you ask the question
then debate the answer

you asked for opinions

Sorry, but I asked for first-hand experiences....not looking for opinions based on non trials, conjecture, and theorizing.
All too often these threads go off on tangents and I was hopeful of avoiding that (silly me).
