tech 21 power engine

Reckless Abandon

Anyone have one or tried one? Good bad for using a preamp like a pod?
Should I jsut get a tube power amp and use my own cab? Later I plan to get an ADA or Marshall preamp.

Re: tech 21 power engine

I have one that I mainly use as a gigging extension for my Trademark 60. I've also used it at home with a TriAC and a CM PlexiTone with excellent results. I haven't tried it with a modeller. It wouldn't be appropriate if you're looking for power amp coloration of the sound - that's not what it's designed for.

It's well made, portable and transparent. The 3-band EQ is useful for tweaking master sound on the fly to suit the room.

I am a fan of Tech 21. Their stuff is well designed, well built, reliable and reasonably priced for the average gigging musician. Whenever I've contacted them I've received a prompt and helpful reply.

Re: tech 21 power engine

thanks. I do not want any power amp coloration really. Should I get a tube power amp instead? I know the tubes will color some but mainly warmth. I will also use a tech 21 british character pedal
thanks

Re: tech 21 power engine

You can run a pre-amp into it - my TriAC is a pre-amp. Pre-amps and modellers are what it's designed for. It's like DI-ing to the PA really. The tone that goes in is what comes out. It's a 1x12 combo so if you're cranking it to fill a room it will have the usual limitations (sounds a bit boxy), though the active EQ does give it plenty of bottom end. It'll give you a great on-stage sound that you can run into the PA via the XLR out or a mic.

Re: tech 21 power engine

I have one. I love it. I run all my modeling gear through it- Boss GT-10, Line 6 POD XT, and some modeling pedals. It's the only solution out there that doesn't color the sound and successfully reproduces the modeled tone.

I've plugged the modeling gear into various tube amps, and there's just too much coloration with the tubes and speakers. The Power Engine delivers the tone clearly, and the models really sound like the amps they're modeling. Now I like my Line 6 gear.

If you need a bigger solution, Tech 21 also makes a 4x10 version (I think).
