Tele bridge Antiquity II question

Digging my Antiquity II Tele bridge pickup, except for the fake aging "goo" it's covered in. To make it look "antique", SD treats the top side of the pickups with a dose of a rust colored coating. I see the amount of "rust" varies from pickup to pickup, some have hardly any, but this one in particular has so much "goo" there are actually runs in it. I would like to remove the rust coating as my USA Reverend Hitman isn't exactly an "ancient relic". Is that stuff lacquer? I'm thinking to gently take a rag dabbed in some lacquer thinner and see if that cleans it off, but I don't want to create a mess or ruin the pup. Anybody have any advice on bringing this "antique" back to the future?

ehhh... im not sure id want to use thinner on a pup but maybe a tiny bit on a qtip to test? im not sure exactly what it is but probably some combination of wax and lacquer.

Hmm, I don't know if any kind of solvent would be good for the bobbin. I would test a *very* small area with whatever you got on hand...and wait a few days to see if it affects the bobbin...but it might just wear off on its own.
