Tele bridge sized P90

With my dreams of the telebro-90 being the latest forum pickup fading, i did some research into companies currently making a tele bridge pickup with P90 characteristics along with a tele vibe. i was hoping someone out there may have some experience with some of them. I saw the Creamery Tele90, the Harmonic Design Super 90, and the Reilander TP90. All seem pretty cool, but if anyone has any experience with these (or others) i'd love to hear it.

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

Rio Grande makes the Dirty Harry and Dimarzio used to make the TDS-1 which was a Tele version of the SDS-1. I have a Dimarzio OEM which is basically a SDS-1 with a brass baseplate and I replace the hex screws with fillister screws. That pickup is the most P90 sounding strat sized pickup that I have found.

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

I really wouldn't classify the QP as sounding like a P90. I have them in one of my Tele's and they are just loud, hard, full frequency single coils. They don't really have the warmth or girth of a P90.

I personally removed the P90 from my Tele and put in a GFS Mini-Filtron with a P90 adaptor ring in my tele. Another cool option for me is a Dimarzio DLX-154. That's soapbar P90 humbucker... Or are you trying to get a P90 in your tele?

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

I was in the same position as you about a year ago, looking at those three exact pickups. I went with the Reilander, because it seemed the closest to an actual P90 construction (it uses a modified P90 bobbin and a metal plate on the bottom, and isn't too hot). I don't think I could be any happier with the tone. It's a very nice sounding pickup. However, at the time, the pickup was advertised with A5 magnets; I ordered it with A2's. Now, it appears that he has split the TP90 into two pickups: one with A5's, and one with A2's. So I'm not sure what the A5 version sounds like.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the guitar is an Esquire, so I don't know how well it plays with other pickups.

Interesting. I have an Esquire too with a Broadcaster in it but have been tossing the idea around of trying something else for kicks. I'll have to look in to this one. JeffB has told me that the Rumpelstiltskin 1950 Black-Rope has a nice P90-ish vibe to it.

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

I had a rio grande dirty harry in my tele for a little bit - before (and after) that it had (/has) a jerry donahue bridge.

I have no idea how the others stack up but the dirty harry was darker and quieter, and not really as punchy. Whereas you can get that piano sounding SRV bass (almost) with the JD the dirty harry was kind of more in the humbucker department with the lows - definitely tight and all but without that upper mid character I like so much in the JD.

It sounded great for distorted stuff but wasn't as versatile as the JD, which also sounds great for distorted stuff, so I took out the rio grande.

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

While I have not tried them all, I have experience with these; SK T-90, HD S-90, Rio Dirty Harry, Vintage Vibe and a few others I can't recall at the moment. I had high hopes from all the stellar reviews and good things I heard about them, but none of these did the trick for me. They are great pickups, but perhaps my expectations were out of line.

A few that got me the closest to what I wanted were Zhangliqun's Paul Bunyan, Don Mare 0038 and the older Dimarzio VV Hot T. The Rielander sounds promising too. Due to their size and construction, P-90 tone is difficult to ape in a tele sized pup. I'm sure someone will nail it though!

Re: Tele bridge sized P90

i've been looking at everything from the gfs 10k fatbody to the ones listed here. the reilander stills sticks out as what i'm looking for most, although the don mare 0038 looks nice, as does the duncan BG1400. decisions decisions...
