Tele pick up question

I have an H-S-S Tele. Is the traditional covered neck pick up appropriate for use in the middle position? I don't believe I've ever seen one used there, just regular Strat singles.

I believe that the reason Tele neck pickups aren't used in the middle position is because the width of them is too narrow. The outside dimesions would be inside of the E strings.

Fender makes a "blackout" Tele with 2 covered "rhythm" pickups, one in the middle, one in the neck.
I've always been curious to the sound of the #4 position on that guitar.
Anyways, there's an in production example from the originators themselves.
