I was thinking of putting a Tele neck pickup in a Strat that I have . Anyone out there done the same thing ? I`m gonna put a JB humbucker in the bridge and no middle pickup . I just felt doing something different.

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

well you could us those but the middle position will be mostly humbucker as i do not think those will balance well, output wise.

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

You could do it easily if you order a new pickguard cut for a Tele neck pickup and humbucker bridge. Like Mrfjones, I'm not sure the results would be especially satisfying...but you could do it. Lew

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

I have a strat and thinking of removing my humbuker pik up slot and chagen it to a nouther one

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

putting a tele pup in a strat sounds like a damn good idea... gotta love tele tone. But is the wiring the same? Like will there be no electrical problems or anything like that?

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

The stock Tele neck pickup is the weak link in a Tele, IMO. A Strat neck pickup sounds much better to me. That's why you see so many altered Teles with differant neck pickups. Lew

Or a strat that is altered to accomodate a (Fralin Blues Sp) tele lead in the bridge! ;)

(7.40K Fralin Blues Special tele lead in the bridge, 6.00K Van Zandt true vintage in the middle, 6.25K Van Zandt vintage + in the neck; Ash body, rosewood neck; Mary Kay White finish)

Re: Tele pickup in a Strat ?

John, Curly thanks guys. BTW I am around, it is just that I somehow did not post that much you know.

That one is ash, and if you remember it is the ash guitar in my "wood test" thread, which should be in the clips section.

That one in comparison to my 90 3c sunburst strat (van zandt blues bridge 7.20K, van zandt vintage + middle 6.40K and van zandt vintage + neck 6.20K (I love those pickups, anyway)) is more lively. It gives way more harmonics. Therefore clean the mary kay white as beates the hell out of the 3c alder.

But with gain, the mary kay white strat becomes wild. :D 3c sunburst alder has a rounder, and deep tone. And in fact, I can refer interested parties that that thread.

The Fralin Blues SP tele lead sounds great. It is beefy, still tons of twang, bright, but not icepicky. Responds to tone control in a very nice way, so that with the TBX tone control on my strat ~5-6 the tone becomes like ~7-8 LP bridge tone. I love that, makes the guitar very versatile. In fact, nowadays I do think that the most versatile strat axe (to get LP tones, not metal tones tho) is not one with a HB in the bridge, but with a tele lead.

BTW I have been comparing that tele lead with the SDJD in my ash body maple neck tele. Love both of them, are different tho. Personally I'd say I liked the JD more, yet Fralin Blues sp sounds more tele to my ears.

Another comparison was with the strat ant custom bridge (yeah I got one from Lew, after listening to you guys). It replaced the PG+ in my lone star tx sp strat. That one is great as well. At first I though I did not like that one as much as the others. But over the last two weeks I find myself using that guitar more and more. Think its addictive! :D

Yes Doc,thanks for filling us in on the strat body comparisons...I do remember listening to the comparisons, and I also remember actually being able to hear tonal differences...Great post with great info as always from you buddy...Hey Doc...How do you remember all of the dc resistance readings on your pickups? Do you have them right at the tip of your tongue,or do you write those numbers down and refer to them? :32:

I like it! I want one in light weight swamp ash and a string through body! Mary Kaye Style. Medium Jumbo frets. Very cool! Lew

I do write them for future reference. But this time my memory was fresh, as I was trying to see if any swaps with the existing pickups I have would improve the tone.

In fact, I swapped the middle and neck fralin vintage hots, middle being 6.30K and neck 5.80K. I thought I would love it, as the van zandt necks I have is like 6.20K. Guess what, I lost the chime, the nasal bloom if you will, and ended up swapping them back! :D
