Tele Pickup Set Advice

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my tele pickups. I have a vox ac15c1x (blue alnico). What I want in my bridge pickup is really nice dirty tone (Keith richards, pete townshend, chuck berry). And for the neck pickup I want a great blues sound, almost strat sound. I really love the sound of david Gilmour (think Shine on you crazy diamond part 1-5) and a Eric Clapton. I have been looking for a set that fits my preference and think the combo or a broadcaster in the bridge and a twisted tele in the neck would be perfect. I also run my tele in a 4-way switch so I would need the set to sound good in series. Also, do you think that I need an OD pedal? I was thinking of a boss bd-2, but other opinions would be appreciated

Re: Tele Pickup Set Advice

a lot of people like the fralin 5% overwound neck with no cover on it for that almost strat like neck tone.
Having the cover on a tele neck pickup affects the sound quite noticeably and rolls off a lot of the high end, which is a big part of why tele necks sound different to strat necks (that and all the other obvious stuff like the ashtray bridge arrangement etc).
Anyways, you might want to check that one out.

The fralin bridge 5% overwound is nice too. I have one in my tele with a more traditional covered tele neck.

The other option might be to contact the SD custom shop and see if they can't either recommend you a set or make something special for your neck position from scratch.

Re: pedals....that is a whole can of worms. Pedals that work great with one particular guitar/amp combination might not be so stellar with another. Having said that tho, the BD-2 is a versatile pedal. The new WAZA craft version is even better. You cant go wrong having one or the other in your gig bag. The other pedal that is tried true is either the boss sd-1 or a tube screamer (808, ts9 etc...take your pick). For the price of a stock blues driver and an sd-1 tho, you can get plenty of great overdrive tones for not a lot of dough. Don't let the price fool you either they are both excellent professional sounding pieces of kit. The really important bit in terms of getting a killer tone is your choice of amp.

With Gilmour and Clapton, you have listed strat players. Maybe buy a strat? Get an EMG Gilmour (SA) set and/or a clapton mid boost for a tone control and you should be set.

A lot of Gilmour's studio stuff was played on a Tele and folks just aren't aware. He also used a Les Paul with P90s to; especially on "Comfortably Numb".

Harmonic Design makes a Strat pickup to fit the Tele neck slot. I haven't got one yet, but it is said to match the tone of their '54 Special Strat neck pickup which is exceptionally sweet. Description's at the bottom of their Tele page:

That's an interesting option, I know a few guys that run regular strat pickups in the neck of their tele for those kinds of tones. I also like a quality mini-humbucker in the neck of a tele.
