Tele pickup

Hi i'm looking to change the pickups in my Tele. The thing is I played with my Les Paul and there it was in your face but when I changed back to my Tele it was like it was shy or something. So I am aware of the little59 in the bridge but what worries me is the difference in volume once i go to the neck pickup. Is there a neck pickup that will be the same or as close as the little59 in volume?

Re: Tele pickup

Depends on if you're looking for a single coil or hb for the neck. For a single coil, I've been looking at the quarter pound tele rhythm. It's supposed to be plenty hot enough to match with a bridge hb.

Re: Tele pickup

I'm very interested in hearing these suggestions too. FWIW, I have a lil 59 and I'm not really feeling it right now... and the volume doesn't match a vintage-type neck single coil.

Re: Tele pickup

I've been giving a lot of thought to a tele build, and when I finally pull the trigger, it will be something like:

Quarter pound tele rhythm (tapped version)
(tele style) HB bridge - probably a lil'59 or hot rails
Concentric 500K pots for independent tone & vol using sdt. tele control plate or pickguard.
Super switch (4p5t) with the following configurations:
1)Neck
2)Neck (tapped)
3)Neck + BridgeHB
4)Neck(tapped) + BridgeHB
5)BridgeHB

Those conbindations are possible using only 3 of the 4 superswitch poles. If you're interested in splitting the BridgeHB for one (or more) of the options, that is still doable using the 4th superswitch pole.

Re: Tele pickup

For the Tele bridge pickup, for me, both the Vintage54 and Broadcaster are just amazing. THAT'S what a Tele should sound like. The V54, more twangy, the Broadcaster, more punchy and rockin.

I honestly can't find a Duncan Tele neck pickup that I like. Everything I try is just way too muffled sounding, I use Dimarzio Twang King's in the neck. Those are GREAT pickups. I'd love to see duncan make a new tele neck pickup that's 42AWG and a nickel silver cover, not the 43AWG and brass cover.

Re: Tele pickup

for the bridge i think the QP is where its at, no questions. I really dont like the lil 59 for some reason. I recently acquired a tele that has the duncan vintage stack in the neck and its a pretty sweet pup. Probably the best traditional tele pup that ive played with.

That being said, i still really like the GFS open face one: http://store.guitarfetish.com/alfaovpotene.html

Re: Tele pickup

I've used both the Broadcaster and the JD for the bridge. I think the JD is a little more punchy. The neck however is always tricky. I've pretty much decided that I like a humbucker in the neck of a Tele. Try the Jazz bridge in the neck. It's a little darker than the normal Jazz, but still has that clear edge that it's known for. It also splits out very nicely.

Re: Tele pickup

I nave an alnico II pro in the neck of my tele with a lil 59. It works well. The thing is that it will make your tele sound darker. I have another tele with a hot stack in the bridge and a vintage stack in the neck. It sounds bright like a tele should and can cut through the mix. Plus, I can split both for single coil as well. I have a third tele with a 59 in the bridge and a 5-2 strat neck. This one is somewhere in the middle. It has a bluesy sound. You can't go wrong with the vintage single suggestions as well, they just won't sound like a humbucker.

Re: Tele pickup

If you don't mind the non-stock look, and you don't mind routing (or your guitar has a HB of swimming pool route) the SM-1 minihumbuckers makes a great Tele neck pickup.
