Tele wiring question

I just read a post at TDRPI where the question was asked about using a 4-way switch in order to get:
Neck (classic 52 "bass sound")
Neck (regular)
Neck and Bridge (regular)
Bridge (regular)

It doesn't seem that hard but the asker has gotten no response, I figured one of our experts could help.

Re: Tele wiring question

I just did this quick & dirty, but this is the basic idea. Just make that cap any value that will suck up highs. A .01uf would probably be a good starting point.

Re: Tele wiring question

Slightly confused. When you say that cap, do you mean replace the existing one or are you adding one to the circuit?

Re: Tele wiring question

Adding one. See the one I've put on the 4-way switch? (Its the little straight line/curved-line thingy.) It will only be switched in at the #4 position of the switch.

Edit: Modded the pic. ;)

Re: Tele wiring question

This is why we have the best forum! The original question was posed on Monday with no correct answer. The questioner was going to give up. It took ArtieToo less then an hour to come to the rescue!

Re: Tele wiring question

It was a team effort. Scott came to the rescue with the proper cap value. ;)

btw - Aren't you the one with the Walnut Squier Tele? I got one for X-mas. (Not walnut, but the Squier Tele.) Cool guitar for the money. Now I want another. :D

Re: Tele wiring question

Yes, I actually sold it recently to Kac. I loved the color and sound but I found the neck a little slim for me + I needed to get some extra $.

Re: Tele wiring question

If you haven't heard the neck with cap Tele sound, you might want to check out a '52 reissue before you do the mod. IMHO (and that of many others), it's a pretty muddy, unusable, bad tone! It seems like the 4-switch neck + bridge in series/neck/neck + bridge/bridge may be more useful. Just my 2¢.

Re: Tele wiring question

For what its worth, I agree with Mike completely. Rolling the tone knob back to zero is about all the high-end loss I'd want.

Re: Tele wiring question

I am the guy that originally asked about this at TDRPI, by the way thanks for refering me here, this is a great forum.

Anyway, the reason I didn't want to go with the standard 4way switch series/parallel wiring is i didn't want to mess with cutting the ground and ruining a brand new Nocaster custom shop neck pick up.

So then I just wired up the 3way switch like the old 52. The neck bass sound has a nice jazz tone, better imo than the neck with the tone rolled off, except that it seems to suffer a volume drop which I don't know if it is normal. I used the .1uf cap that is called for in the Fender wiring diagram. The .05, according to the diagram, is for the regular tone cap.

I am getting great tones out of all the other positions including the "in between" position.

I may leave everything like this, or experiment w/ different caps, or get up the guts to cut the ground.......Too many choices........

Thanks for you help
