Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

Can you just install one of these Gibson type bridges on a regular tele or does it need any modification except for the small routing for the bridge?

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

I would think you could remove the plate/ashtry bridge and install a tune-o-matic/stoptail. Seymour's TeleGib is built like that. The only thing I can see is that you'll have 6 holes where the strings came through the body. You'll also have either 3 or 4 holes where the bridge mounted; unless you fill them.

Ok! Thanks for the info Butch! I have tried the above tele and compared it with regular teles and i prefer the tone the TOM bridge gives.

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

By far the best way i have found to do this is to recess the TOM and use a string thorugh body. Take it to a pro luthier would be my advice. The only other option would be reseeting the neck angle which personally i think is more risky. Jsut tweaking the truss rod wont fix the problem.

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

Probably even closer than that. Chances are if that guitar came from the shop with the TOM and stop piece on it then it already has the necessary neck pocket angle which i think is about 12 degrees. The typical fender neck pockets have a flat neck pocket, ie 0 degrees.

So your bridge would need to be rediculously close to the body to compensate for the lack of angle.

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

So i'm stuck with the fender type bridges unless i mod the neck pocket?

In a nut shell....yes. The only way to get gibson style bridges on a fender guitar is either to mod the neck pocket or route a small recessed cavity for the TOM so it sits lower in the body.

The second method only works with a string through body, if you want the stop piece then you pretty much have to mod the neck pocket.

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

I'm a TOM kinda guy myself. I wish Fender made some Strats with TOM bridges.

Re: Tele with Tuneomatic/Wrap around bridge?

Yeah, just shim. There's nothing wrong with shimming

In any case, because I hate TOMs I put a Jag bridge on my Tele... I really only needed to shim it as much as any Fender. And as for the tailpiece...

Anyway, I've since affixed the bondos to all the unnecessaries, though paint still has to wait :)
