Telecaster Volume Knob Mod.

I've been looking at different ideas on low-profile knobs for my Tele. I have a reversed control plate and I was hitting the standard Volume Knob all the time. After that I had a very low knob on there, that was pretty good. Now I had the idea to put a Jazzmaster Roller Knob instead. It's really cool. Check out the pics!

The Jazzmaster Roller (or Thumbwheel) knob on the volume pot. Really easy to grab because it's knurled.

Closer view of the same thing. I ground down the shaft of the Pot with a Dremel to make it lower.

Side view of the Jazzmaster Roller knob. You can see how much lower it is than the Tone Knob.

That is a great idea! My Tele has a reverse control plate too but I don’t seem to hit the knob while playing.
A Strat OTOH is an issue. I removed the first volume knob and made a universal volume and universal tone.

Thanks! Glad you like the idea!

Cool thing you did with your Strat. I have a custom strat with one volume and one tone, and it's also not an issue.

On my Tele with the reverse control plate the standard volume knob was just too high. This mod is also cool because it makes pinky volume swells really easy.

Looks good to me! Thanks for the idea in case I need it in the future!

I have a 7 String Ibanez that has a single volume, no tone and a toggle kill switch.
The location of the volume is problematic for me. So I’ve ordered a momentary push button for the kill switch and I’m going to reverse the kill switch and volume knob!
I don’t have a pic right now but I’ll try to get one after work so you can see it.

Re: Telecaster Volume Knob Mod.

Where did you get that knob?
The kill switch I bought won’t fit the knob hole in my guitar without reaming it out so I might just look into a low profile knob like yours....

Unless anyone has any other ideas to switch the volume knob with the kill switch on an Ibanez iron label 7 string?

Re: Telecaster Volume Knob Mod.

Well..you can use a reamer or a Dremel to widen the hole. I use a Dremel all the time when I upgrade my client's pots from imports to USA made.

As to the knobs, just do a search for "Jazzmaster Roller Knobs". Make sure you get the ones made for the Japanese Fenders. Those knobs have a 1/4" center hole. The ones made for the USA guitars have a much smaller center. I guess they use a skinnier pot.

If I widen the hole, and swap the volume pot to the kill switch (which is already a wider hole) I’m assuming I would just need a couple of washers to properly cover the larger hole?
That would be the ideal solution.

Re: Telecaster Volume Knob Mod.

Washers are all you would need. However, how come you can't size the hole so the switch is fitted tightly?

Re: Telecaster Volume Knob Mod.

The guitar has only one volume knob and a toggle style kill switch. I’ll be replacing the toggle for a momentary push button kill switch. The hole for the toggle is larger than the hole for the volume pot. If I swapped locations of the volume and toggle I would need to open the hole to accommodate the toggle and then find a way to stabilize the volume pot being in the larger hole (where the toggle was).
