Telecaster wood

Re: Telecaster wood

Ash will have more snap and is tighter than alder. Alder is a bit warmer. But twang does not come from wood alone. Nor does it come from pickups and amps, etc. THere's a whole formula that you have toi build from and it starts with your fingers.

Very well put BS123, Since most vintage tele's where made with Ash
I would go that route. And don't forget a vintage 3 saddle brass bridge
for major twang. :)

Thanks, but I'll tell ya what... There are a lot of really great Tele players out there who get major twang with an American standard 6-saddle bridge. I used to think the same thing though.

Here's a couple-
Brent Mason
Johnny Hiland

Major twang from both those guys and their bridge is the American Standard type.

Re: Telecaster wood

I have three Teles...all one piece maple neck, Kluson tuners, and old style 3 brass saddle bridge design.

One is alder and the other two are very lightweight swamp ash...lighter than my alder Tele.

The alder Tele, which is light and resonant but just a little heavier than the two swamp ash Teles, is the brightest of the three.

So wood species is perhaps not as important as weight in predicting "bright vs. warm" tone...

I think alder got a reputation for being warmer than swamp ash because 60's alder Strats tend to be a little warmer and rounder sounding than 50's swamp ash Strats...

But I think the 60's alder Strats tend to sound warmer and rounder because they have real Brazilian Rosewood fingerboards...NOT just because the bodies are made of alder!

Alder can be brighter than Swamp Ash if the alder is heavier than the Swamp Ash it is being compared to.
