Tell me about sustain

What causes it or helps it?

I am mainly interested in helping my son get more sustain with his Epi LP with a 59n and CC bridge. He uses 10s. He likes Heavey rock/ Blues.

Don't mean to hijack your thread here but:

Does truss rod rattle detract from the natural sustain of a guitar? I've got a Jap Les Paul that rattles like hell in the neck due to a loose truss rod. I've only had it for a few months and its going to the shop for a fix but I thought I'd field a few opinions here on the effect on sustain.

Re: Tell me about sustain

Oh yeah... from what I know:

I think the main contributor to sustain is the resonance of the guitar's wood. This unfortunately cannot be changed in a Les Paul. The best test of the resonant qualities of a guitar is to play the guitar acoustically without electrical amplification. Usually resonant guitars have better overall tone and better sustain. From what I understand, resonance is determined by the quality of the wood in the guitar and the 'match' of the neck to the body of the guitar.

Another factor that affects sustain is of course the pickups. You've swapped out the stock Epi pickups, so that should probably improve the tone and sustain somewhat.

I've heard that the weight of the stop-tailpiece on Les Paul models is another contributing factor. I've heard conflicting reports about this: some say the lighter the better... others vice versa.

You can add mass to the headstock for increased sustain, too.

Yep, the Groove Tubes Fat Finger works wonders on my Carvin. It added sustain and low end. Also, try lowering the pickups a bit. This will lessen the magnetic pull and increase the time the strings ring out, thus creating a bit more sustain. Raising the action a bit also helps, as does going with heavier strings. I play my LP with a 10-52 set and it rings out beutifully.

Good stuff, thanks guys. I will check it out. Where do you get that GT thing?

Musician's Friend. I got mine for $30 in a Gold finish.

Re: Tell me about sustain

what i would suggest is start by wrapping more of the string around the post to get the string angle over the nut a little sharper. then id put the stop tail piece all the way down on the body, itll put a little stiffer feel to the strings but youll get better sustain. the steeper angle over the nut and bridge saddle the more sustain youll get.
lowering the pups a touch will help reduce the magnetic pull, the magnet on the 59n is stronger than that of the cc.
higher action (to a point, dont have to go crazy) tends to have better sustain
