Tell me about the Skinnerburst set, please

Whats the deal with these? Are they just a pair of Antiquities with A3? Any experience?

Worth putting them on a '13 Traditional? I enjoy the Classic 57, but i wanted to try something a little more refined.

THANKS!

You can get pretty close with a pair of A3 Antiquities, but they are actually based off of the PAFs that came from Joe Bonamassa's "Skinner" Les Paul. I have very limited experience with them.

I don't have any experience with them either, but I have had a lot of pickups made by the Custom Shop. I can tell you that every custom pickup has been of excellent quality and superior tone. I know it's a bit expensive, but I don't think you would ever be disappointed by a Custom Shop set... and if you were I think they'd bend over backwards to help you make it right. Seriously.

Put a set in a clients bonamassa Les Paul and appear to be a somewhat limited 'one trick pony' pickups...

Very bright, little depth, thinking it would require a very warm amp... This thread goes into lots if detail...

Re: Tell me about the Skinnerburst set, please

I personally find A3 timid and polite in a humbucker bridge. It sounds great EQ wise, but it doesn't have enough output. For my taste, A3 sounds better in the neck or single coils (tele bridge pickup/p90s).

Short answer, no they aren't quite antiquities. I've played both Bonamassa sets from his LPs and thoroughly enjoyed the neck pickups. The Magellan (1st) set is my favorite. Overall, the Skinner set had great clarity, but were a bit stale in the end.

If you want to ballpark it, use duncans, and avoid the CS, antiquities with A3s should fit the bill.
