Tell me about the Tiny Terror

Ok, so here's the deal. I've got a 5150II which I've had for 2 years now. I bought it with the intention to gig but that never happened. I've got a hotplate that I use with it but I've come to realize that I am attenuating too much.

I'd like to have something that I can use at bedroom volumes. I'm not ruling out modelling amps (such as the vox ones) just yet. I want to see if there's any tube amps out there and if an amp like the Tiny Terror would fit the bill. All I know is that the TT won't have the gain that my 5150II has, but I can always get some pedals to add to the madness. :D

So what do you think?

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

All I've heard are great things about the TT. I actually went to check one out at a store in town today but they were all out :smack: :arg: .

Yeah, I've heard good things too. I did a search earlier and I think B Bent has one, or had one. Hopefully he will chime in.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

They'e cool. Decent brit clean, very cool classic rock mid gain tone. If you push them they tend to start to sound a bit fuzzy and loose in the bottom end, like all EL84 amps.

But it's still a pretty loud amp. Almost giggable, definitely rehearsable volume, and the 7 watt switch is still pretty loud. I suggest you check out the Matamp minimat for a truly bedroom-usable tube amp.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

I don't know, sounds great but I can't justify $549 plus tax and shipping for this tone and considering that it will be pretty much a practice tool.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

The Tiny terror is a great amp, but not really ideal as a bedroom amp. It's pretty loud even on the 7 watt setting. You'll probably have to look at a 1 or 1/2 watt amp if you want to stick with valves, else go for the modelling route.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

Greg had one, already sold it (like you guys are surprised!). I'll tell you this, I played through that amp several times and for the price it's damn hard to beat but it's hardly a bedroom amp...like anything with a master volume it sounds best the higher you can ge (and keep) the master but it does have useable tones at lowish volumes. If you want one for playing at home and nothing else get a 1x12 cab and maybe even use your hotplate with the TT as well...between a 1x12 cab, a hot plate and the TT's master volume you should be able to get it sounding decent at lower volumes.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

Thanks for the comments guys.

Dr.Mavashi, thanks for the clips.

Sounds like a great amp but I think maybe I'm going to go the modelling amp route.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

i concur that even 7 watts will be ridiculously loud for a bedroom. i just bought a zxex nano amp. it's a 1/2 watt tube amp. run thru an orange 2x12 is amazingly loud. but i can't say enough about how incredible that little guy sounds. it's a really great sounding amp.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

One thing no one ever talks about is that you need to get the speakers moving before any amp is going to sound great. All amps suffer at low volumes. Sure, you can pull some good tones out of a SS amp at low volumes, but even they will sound better with some volume making the speakers work.

With that said, the TT sounds really good at bedroom volumes. Turn it up and it sounds even better. As others have said it can be a loud little amp but that just adds to the versatility of the amp. I think it's the best "little" amp I've played yet. Clean to grind it's all in there.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

before i bought the nano i did some research on these low wattage tube amps. you should check out the matamp minimat! switchable b/w 2 and 4 watts and has a built in attenuator. the problem for me is that they are priced around $700 and are backordered. but i seriously considered pulling the trigger on it. looks fantastic. and with matamps reputation i'd bet they sound amazing.

emerysound also makes a 2 watt all tube amp, called the microbaby.

I definitely considered the minimat. Like you say - $700 for a small amp is a little steep and the back order doesn't work for my instant gratification needs LOL. Another thing that kind of turned me off on them was the lack of gain. I tend to play everything with at least a little grit and a lot of time a lot of grit. From what I've heard and read it doesn't have much grind to it at all. I know this can be cured with pedals but I like to plug straight in. I have heard though that the amp is awesome sounding and the construction is second to none. I'll probably end up with one sooner or later just to check it out but I think my next purchase is going to be one of those nanos. They sound really good and look like a tone of fun. Are you running any pedals through yours? I may have to break down and go to the dark side and get a pedal board too.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

Before you can't find them anymore, buy a Valvetronix head w/blue grill, and use it with your 5150's cab. You can approximately clone your Peavey tube head, but turn it down, and take advantage of the variable wattage selector.

If you like what the Peavey does, the Tiny Terror won't sound similar at all, but the Vox Valvetronix can. You could probably even clone the TT sound using the Vox AC-15 and AC-30 settings.

Re: Tell me about the Tiny Terror

i have only briefly experimented with using pedals in front of the nano. i have a vstack overdrive/preamp pedal which i like a lot. i thought it sounded really good with it. until then i had only used it as a guitar preamp for direct recording. i've read so many reviews on the nano i can tell you most rave about how it takes pedals. but personally i have been so totally enamoured with the sound i'm getting by plugging straight in i don't think i need a pedal for a great rock/metal tone. i've been a pod user for so long now that to experience the great tone coming from the simple setup of: guitar-->tubeamp has been a revelation! yea, ok, i'll say it, it's been spiritual!
