Tell me how a Quarter Pounder for Strat sounds tapped

Hi all,

Finishing a partscaster build and in the fence on what I’m going to put in the bridge. My options are (from the parts drawer) an SSL 5 or a Quarter Pounder tapped version. I never really got a chance to use the QP, so not sure what to expect in tapped mode. Would be using it with an aps-2 and an SSL 2, if ideal in tapped mode in the down position on the push/pull, up for leads and extra horsepower.

Can any one give an example of a similar pickup that sounds like the QP when tapped so I can make a more informed choice?

Thanks!

So...

While I’m awaiting the body of my Partscaster’s arrival... I’m impatient looking at you post office... I put the Quarter Pound in the bridge position. Wired so in the down position on a push/pull it’s tapped and the tone control is active, in the up position the pickup has the full coil and the tone control is bypassed. In theory this should deal with the inequity of pot resistance for tapped and non.

Using the super precise tone test of taping pickups with a screwdriver, the tapped Quarter Pound sounds a lot like an American Standard pickup. I can live with that.

Still looking for feedback before I assemble the guitar.

Thanks

Want feedback? Ditch the shielding foil, maybe don't ground the trem

Hells if you get lucky you might even pick up AM radio!!

I've used a tapped QP before- it is one of the few pickups where both sounds are equally as useful. Tapped, it sounded like a regular single coil to me.

Good to hear about the tapped QP. I have a SSL-5T, which is tapped in the middle. Since i use it in the bridge position, the tapped mode is too thin and brite. It works better in the neck, but i did not like the full mode SSL-5 in the neck.
BTW I use a circuit that makes the the SSL-5T in the bridge poition see a 500k volume and the tone pot is a blender between the tapped and the full mode. Works for me.

I love the QP. I don't have the tapped version but in split coil it still sounds great...still sounds like a single coil Strat pup. If I wasn't so satisfied with the split sound I'd wire it with a "spin-a-split" to simulate the tapped tone.

Cool Guitardoc,

The dial a tap might be ideal for another build.

The body for my partscaster is “out for delivery” so will report back on what the tapped QP is closest to. It reads 7.1 K resistance when tapped, so hoping it’s close to an SSL 2...
