i've never had an amp with and effects loop before and i've always just run everything together in front of the amp...so...what effects are best through the loop and why and what's the main benefeits of it etc?!

thanks in advance,

Re: tell me the benefeit of an effects loop?!

Modulating effects seem to perform better in the loop. Effects such as delays, Chorus, Flange, Phazers. I have 2 amps and use both. One has a loop and one does not. When I run a good amount of gain and delay through my amp without the loop the delay tends to "clip" the natural decay of the notes. The preamp is pushing slightly behind the notes and the delays is just a tad in front of that so it can cause the delay to sound odd it is creating repaeats before the note is compleley decayed. I usually favor playing this way in my amp with the loop.

Overdrives and Wahs I prefer to run straight in. I only have my Chorus and Delay in the loop.

I thought one of the advantages of using the effects loop was the ability to mix a dry (unaffected) guitar sound with a wet sound (effects mixed in). In other words, to mix the level of your effects with your regular guitar sound.

Personally, I prefer the sounds of my effect running thru the front of the amp.

Re: tell me the benefeit of an effects loop?!

Delay pedals sound better in a loop if you have one, if your preamp is overdriven.

Also, if you're one of these idiots who runs their amp volume at 10 and controls the level with the guitar amp ( like I do :) ) and you try to flip a delay pedal on, it's unbearably noisy.

That's why I want to find out if I can add a by-passable effects loop to my Traynor Bassmaster. Otherwise it's Guitar > Amp for me, period.

Hoss - one thing to think about is serial vs. parallel effects loops. You can only get what lex666 was talking about with a parallel loop. IIRC a lot of effects loops just insert into the amp at one point with the entire signal going through the loop and no "dry" signal running parallel to mix with the "wet" signal later. Also, you need to be able to adjust the mix to get the benefits of a parallel loop.

I'm not saying "a parallel effects loop is the only way to go", just trying to help.

Well, you get 2 more jacks and sometimes a trim control but as to the benefit...Imnot sure yet!

Im just old school...I run 'em up front!

Re: tell me the benefeit of an effects loop?!

I use the loop on my amps for delay and volume boost. Wah, drive and chorus go in the front. The benefit for me with the loop is that by putting the micro amp in there I get a clean boost i.e it's not driving the preamp into saturation... and I can get a really big leap in volume if I want. The delay just seems to sound better in there. All the best.
