Ok After A lot of years since the Super 3 came out, who is still using it over other newer and older pickups and why? And what guitars are you using it through (wood combinations) and what amps and speakers are you using?

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

I have one in my parts drawer at the moment. It's waiting on a that's a little brighter in its natural sound than what I had it in. I like it, just not in a dark guitar.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

sometimes the DiMarzio Super 3 seems like the little pickup that could.

it sort of seems to fly under the radar, often times misunderstood and/or overlooked. when I've talked about it, I reference that it came as the stock pickup in a Jackson PC1. all the comments I'd read had me prepared to remove the Super 3, but giving it a little time revealed a pickup that I do really like.

I ended up getting a 2nd PC1, expecting to totally gut the sustainer and replace all the pickups.... still hasn't happed - although I've strongly been thinking about swapping the HS2 for one of the Area models. lol! that being said, the guitar(s) have a mahogany back and a maple drop top. maple neck and maple board. both Floyds have TiSonix titanium inserts/studs. one Floyd has a brass block and the other has titanium.

it's been out for about 22 years now. the DiMarzio tone guide for it really sells it short, in as much as I expected it to have a much more reserved high end. it's been much more versatile that expected and I find that it sits in the mix really well.

Darth is spot on. I've played a few PC1's, and that's where I first came upon it. I've yet to buy a PC1, but it's on my list, if I don't try to build a replica, sans the sustainer.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

I have one in my Ibanez RG655, paired with Humbucker from Hell. The previous owner attempted to achieve 'djent' sound with it, cause the original one which is Tone Zone just didn't cut it. It really is a lot brighter than the Tone Zone, which to my ear is quite dull sounding.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

DKSears Yeah I also have with my parts area and was also waiting on the perfect guitar to put it in. But out of curiosity I ended up putting it in a Jackson Alder Body with maple top Peavey Ebony fretboard maple neck hybrid guitar. I loved how it gave me heavy chunk and singing screaming leads thru a Marshall 8100 and 4 Celestion G12T-75s. Now I have it in my Burny Flametop Les Paul and love that Super 3 even more. The Burny, the Super 3, the Marshall 8100 and the G12T-75s all together give a very full, very heavy metal sounds and does classic rock and reggae music very good. But I will ask u this, what is your amp and speakers you use?

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

Darth yea it really does. Yes very overlooked. Bro hell yea those area pickups sounds nice af. Nice any clips of the differences that those two guitars produce due to the brass and titanium differences would be a killer and relative video/or clip(s). I will ask you the same thing, what amp and speakers are you using?

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

I like it as a nasty over the top pickup. I don't consider it versatile, just one great sound. There was a stock IBZUSAF3 pickup that is supposedly a close cousin to the Super 3, but it has regular allen head pole pieces and keeper bars, instead of the Super 3 which has the fat poles and no keeper bars. I've owned both several times.

I don't own one today, but when I did, it was always in some kind of H/S/S powerhouse, a few different wood combinations, often with a Rails style neck and middle. I think it's a good pickup in Basswood, which is often a difficult wood to match. It's definitely one of those pickups that a "pickup enthusiast" should try.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

Obsessive yea it is brighter than a tone zone and also more expressive. Any clips of the Ibanez with the Super 3?

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

Awesome details. It is a very good over the top pickup. I feel it can be versatile depending on the woods plus amps and speakers. What speakers did u run them thru? Also, speaker about pickups similarities have u guys ever compared the ORIGINAL Super 3 the H1 pickup?

not this minute. I've discussed what I've "heard" about brass and titanium many times.

I'm currently waiting on another StoneTone block for Floyds, for the very purpose of running them out against each other (brass, titanium, granite). I've checked out a StoneTone on a Gotoh bridge, and will be commenting about that block once the comparison with the other blocks on a FR is complete.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

I just put one in a handmade guitar - bolt on maple neck w/rosewood fingerboard, Gibson scale, HEAVILY chambered mahogany body with a 1/4" maple top, tom bridge & stop tailpiece. I really like it. The guitar sounded thin with a JB, oddly twangy with a Super Distortion, so I tried a Tone Zone and the Super 3, which I had never even heard of before.
I expected to prefer the Tone Zone, but ended up preferring the Super 3.
This is running into a late '70s Randall RG100ES head (solid state but kick-ass) and a 2x12 cabinet with one Eminence Tonker and on Tonkerlite.
The amp leans a bit bottom heavy and so do the speakers. The Super 3 thickened up the sound in a really nice way.

I do not play metal, I play punk & alternative with a very hard, heavy classic rock sound. Already planning to put a Super 3 into my next guitar.

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

Got 1 on "standby" for a Strat project...

Still kinda on the fence between teh S3 & TZ,PAF Pro @ nk,Alder/Maple...

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

They were the stock bridge buckers in the old late 1980's Strat and tele HM's. Owned a few like a Dimarzio SD with the top rolled back and more bottom end. Great pickup in a brighter guitar through a JCM 8 or 900Marshall!

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

Does the Super 3 have an A8 or is that a different pickup I'm thinking of?

Re: Test Of Time DiMarzio Super 3

I had a HM Strat with one in it, I thought it was a "fun" pickup to play. It was "warm" but wasn't as dark as I expected it to be based on the description. It seemed to have a lot of compression so switching between picking and legato stuff was pretty seamless. Harmonics were also really easy to get. I really like it, it almost feels like cheating for some things.

Strangely enough, I think the Breed has a lot of the same qualities while being more polite than the S3 and with more manageable output. I have a Breed in the bridge of my main JEM.
