THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

Let it B
Just got done installing the Pearly Gates set in another guitar- My new PRS Starla. Big fat all mahogany tone- dark/warm, tons of low end but each note rings clear as a bell. The stock pickups were very good (by far, the best PRS pups I've encountered), I really second guessed changing them out for the past few weeks-but I wanted more bite/treble content out of the bridge/neck, without sacrificing the neat vintage character the stockers had.

The PRS was a pain to wire up- I had it totally wired wrong the first time (3 way strat style switch + coil tap on the tone pot) and was getting nothing-Then I realized that what I *thought* was the "hot" coming out of the PRS pickups was the coil tap. With some investigation here and over at BAM, I finally figured it out, and thankfully got it together without feeling like sticking the soldering iron in my eye from too much frustration :D

In my EPI, while they were a big improvement over stock, the PGs were a little too high endy-not alot of meat, and a bit muddy (obviously the differences in wood, and commmon with epis , IME) But boy oh boy there is PLENTY of meat with them in the PRS- I was worried I'd lose that because the PRS pickups had alot of lows and low mids. The PG bridge screams, yet is sweet , thick, great low end, tons of pick attack and retains great note definition. Didn't lose anything and gained EXACTLY what I wanted. It can purr, it can get raunchy like Freddie King, and it can get nasty enough for classic 70s/early 80s metal.

I actually really liked the PRS neck pup because it was clear and didn't have too much bass- but still had good mids- just enough of each without getting boomy or muddy. The PGn has a bit more bass and low mids, and thus has a little mud- need to tweak some. But I think I can get it worked out. Top end is really sweet as always.

Thats gained out (for me- think 2205 levels of gain). Cleans are absolutely brilliant- Again the PRS pickups were really good on cleans too-clear, but dark/warm. the PGs really opened up the clean tones. Beautiful "round" vintage PAF type sounds with a little more clarity and sparkle WITHOUT losing any "meat".

Now one of the biggest changes was in FEEL of the instrument- the PRS Starlas are alnico, but what alnico I have no idea. With the PGs in, the guitar is much less "stiff" playing- bends easier and had to drop my pick gauge as the strings got looser- sustain increased as well (and heights of the pickup sets before and after are pretty much exactly the same). Hell, I may even go up a gauge in strings!

In this guitar they are def a 9.5 outta 10. Highly reccomended for an all mahogany short scale :bigthumb:

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

Congratulations, sounds really nice but I'm baffled - how does changing pickups make the strings looser ?

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

weaker magnetic field- less pull on the strings- the Starla pickups have oversized slugs as well.

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

I just installed a PG neck on my Charvel So-Cal. I think it's the best neck pickup I've ever used. I never used to spend much time playing the neck pickup, but with Pearly i never want to stop! Sounds great pumped up by OD and fuzz too.

Did yours have the DiMarzio or 59 in it?

Here's a before & after pic (would look better with covers, but..)

The Dimarzio. And I had already dumped the bridge Dim for a Duncan Custom Custom too.

I have a Charvel San Dimas also that still has the stock Duncans. Right now, the 59 neck in that guitar is going "uh oh!"

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

PGN-one of my all-time favorites, equally awesome in Mahogany/set neck as it is in a bolt-on Maple neck construction, Gibson or Fender scale.

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

I have a Pearly Gates marked PGN, and the box said it is a neck pickup.
However, the wires come out of the wrong end, is yours like that ?
Mine are nickel covered, and when the screws are put closest to the neck, the wires are coming out of the top of the pick up.
Do you think mine is marked wrong ?

:laugh2: It's funny, 25-ish years ago I loved the 59N, and not the bridge. In my old age, the opposite is my taste.

Hmmm... you know, I don't recall how the wire came out, but I don't believe it was like that. Shoot Frank/Evan a PM, or call Duncan CS, they'll straighten it out!

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

The first time I saw that guitar I thought - it would be a great axe for AC/DC kind of stuff. Now that Angus uses PGs in his SG... let's say I know what I want to hear when you will make a demo for us. :D

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

I have a PGB on the way. Rarely i heard the praise of the PGB, more often people rave about the PGN.

LOL. we'll see. honestly the guitar has alot more low end, than a SG, despite the looks- it's more like an Explorer, but with the PGs she's got some bite now for sure. I'm not too good at evoking angus, but I'll throw in a riff or two.

1) you need a guitar with usable tone/volumes control- it helps to be able to roll off a little here and there and then slam it to 10 when necc for the full impact of the pure tone holiness that is the PGb ;).

but the most important thing is.....

2) a TRULY good piece of wood. Alot of guitars (all makes, all species of wood) lacks low end or is muddy, and/or is geared towards the high mids/treble. PG bridge is a bad match for those kind of guitars, but something with some beef- a really great les paul, and explorer, etc- awesome sauce!

Re: THANK YOU SEYMOUR! (PG set content)

I used a PG set in my former ltd ec-1000 for a long time and it was amazing...

I still use a PG neck in my les paul Custom, great sounding neck PU for sure.
