Re: THD amps, your opinions?
Keep in mind that the Univalve will not sound like the soundclips on the THD website. Those clips have reverb added in the mix. It says so on the site. I thought the Univalve could sound like that right out of the box. Not. You have to swap a boatload of tubes and get reverb somehow. The soundclips on their website are a little misleading on what the amp will sound like. On my Univalve, I can't get close to that sound live unless I run two amps. Which is a cool feature of the Unvalve, it allows you to use the line out to run a second amp. So you could run the univalve dry and a second amp wet (with effects or reverb). I've enjoyed doing this, but haven't really enjoyed the Univalve much on it's own.
I made the mistake of thinking that the built in attenuator on the Univalve would allow me to crank it at home (yes, I was that naive) but not so. This thing is a beast at 15 Class A watts and no master volume. Don't believe the line on their website about getting "power tube distortion at almost any volume." Anything much lower than 12 o'clock on the built in attenuator will sound like a bad transister radio if you're using the Rock channel. But the built in attenuator could be usefull at a gig volume.
Keep in mind that I haven't done a ton of tube swapping. That's becuase I don't want to spend a boatload of money on NOS tubes and then find out I still don't love this amp.
Overall my impression of THD's Univalve amp is that it's too bright and very unforgiving. Unforgiving isn't a terrible thing if you're trying to improve sloppy technique, but a bit sloppy playing has it place in my style. Also, it doesn't like my pedals, a Blues Driver and a Tubescreamer. I usually spend the first half hour trying to dial in a decent tone on the Univalve. It can be a frustrating amp. For now it doesn't get much play. But I'll hold onto it. It can get some sweet tones with some serious tweaking, I just don't think it's an out of the box sound great amp. It also looks a bit like a toaster with that metal cage. I wouldn't buy it again. There was alot of hype when they came out but now they're popping up used like roadkill on the side of the road. I'd be shocked if this thing was a future classic. If it is, I'll pull it out of the closet & sell it for highdollars.
