I use my AC30 head with a Matchless 2 x 12 cab. The cab is the same size as an AC30 but it’s much lighter. And it looks kinda cool. Sounds great.

Thanks! I'm just getting to know the Mesa but I like all four modes (Clean/Crunch & Blues/Burn) it has via toggles and the Clean/Blues Settings are actually quite nice and satisfying as well as the obvious Crunch/Burn that you would expect to be great with a Mesa. Add a the option of Pre-Set EQ on each channel or self set via the 5 Band Slider EQ and a Solo Boost and it's pretty well equipped.

Good to hear. I also like your vintage cab, those are cool. I almost dropped the card on one, but it was a less useful 4x12, which I really don't need another of, as the studio is quite fuil of amps. One advantage of smaller amps that no one ever talks about it that you can fit more of them in any given room. :friday:

Speaking of which, I don't know if you or anyone else on the thread ever watches YouTube gear videos, but there is this guy Fred Sweet who makes some really nice ones. He just plays songs, cutting back and forth between the gear being compared pretty seamlessly. It must be a video editing nightmare (and he usually has video effects in the background). Anyway, a few of his older videos you can see various racks of amps in storage, his favorites are displayed on a wall on special shelves in his living room.

For some guitar amps are a simple tool, for others a hobby, for some lucky few a lifestyle.

i use 1x12 combo's 99% of the time. i have a 2x12 cab that i love but i barely use it. if i do i put a 1x12 combo or dual showman reverb head on top of it. sounds great but its one more thing to carry and is unnecessary

Mesa Boogie MkV and custom 2×12, my Electra Dyne also works very well with this cab.

Option 2 and 3
- 1 x 12 combo + extension
- Head + 2 x 12 Vertical cab

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

Is that a Super 400 with soapbars in it?
Take the world's most expensive production guitar, loved by jazzers.
Mount up the most gritty single coil ever, loved by Neil Young.
Makes perfect sense Keith would have one.
Also looks like a Brownface Super there?

You do realize that Gibson didn't start making guitars with humbuckers until 1957, so everything prior would have P90s or similar. That particular Super 400 is an early '57 made prior to the humbucker switch over.

While P90s can be gritty they certainly don't have to be and they can have a great clean tone. One of the coolest jazz boxes I've ever played was an ES-175 from either '54 or '56 with dual P90s. I liked it better than later ones I've played with PAFs, and the P90 models cost half as much or less comparatively.

I currently have a head + dual 2x12 setup. Much easier on the back to carry this rig up and down stairs. I have wheels on the bottom cab so when I don't have stairs to contend with, I stack them back up and roll them to the destination.

I get the benefits of a 4x12 but it's scaleable to a single 2x12 if I prefer. And if I need less volume, I have lower powered heads and a 1x12.

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

My preference for the last few years is a head + vertical 2x12. The one on the left is loaded with Emi GB128 speakers, running at 16 ohms. The one on the right has two Cannabis Rex speakers, and will run both at 8 ohms, one at 16 ohms, and both individually at 16 ohms each. This last option means I could run two seperate heads into it at 16 ohms each and switch between them. It also has the option of using the top speaker open back or closed.

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

I love the 4x12 for the simple reason that I love the 25 watt Greenback sound, and the low power rating of those pretty much demand a 4x12 for anything but a lunchbox amp. However, I also like to run stereo, and having two 4x12s isn't realistic for several reasons. Two 2x12s might work, on the other hand, and whilst I don't own any, this is a possibility I am currently looking into. My answer would therefore have to be two 2x12s for ease of stereo rig application.

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

I voted head and 2/12. I like 4/12 but it is not always required, 1/12 is not bad but not enough. 2/12 is just right. I always prefer some sort of head cabinet combination over a combo.
I haven't played on a stage for sometime but when I did a couple of them were very tight. I found that sometimes we had to wedge the cabinets in some tight spots and with a head you can have it set up in a convenient spot for adjusting knobs away from the cabinet.

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

My ideas have changed over time. I've mostly had 2x12 combos since I've been playing... and mostly the Marshall variety. JCM 600 and JCM 800 4212. At one time I had a Marshall 4x12 to go with my 800. I currently have a Marshall DSL40c in a 1x12, but I want to move to a head and a 2x12. I think that is the ultimate versatile setup, for home use or gagging.

2x a single 12 cab. Stereo effects in the loop.

Yes, I know the first Les Pauls were P-90 equipped.

That particular Super 400 is an early '57 made prior to the humbucker switch over.
Now that I didn't know.

And that's something else I don't know. I associate P-90s almost exclusively with gritty dirt tones. Also, with guitars like this, not like the Super 400. That's what is cool about coming here, live and learn!

Joe Strummer's Music Man 2x12 and road case.

clash-case.jpg

A very, very rare piece of Rock History. This is Joe Strummer’s Music Man HD 212 150 & Calzone road case. Joe favored these Music Man amps and he is pictured in numerous photos using them during live performance and backstage. This amp comes from Gary Twinn who was a member of the Twenty Flight Rockers, a band who were managed by Bernie Rhodes, who also managed the Clash.
They exchanged some equipment between the two bands, some of Gary’s
gear going to Clash bassist Paul Simonon, and Gary ending up with Joe
Strummer’s Music Man combo in the original pink “Clash” flight case.
Written in Joe’s hand on the flight case lid, is “THE PERFECT SOUND”,
obviously referring to the amp inside.
This amp has also, more recently, been used by the Ex-Generation X
guitarist, Bob Derwood Andrews. Comes with a letter of provenance and photo from Gary Twinn. Please inquire for price or call for more information.

I was once a good 1x12 combo man, but now I own a 2x12 1936 Lead cab with Jube mini head. This setup can be low as bedroom level or a beast at a club (to an extent of course :lmao:).

Re: The 2 x 12: How do like it served? Combo, Combo+Extension, or Head+Cab.

Voted, but not really sure what I voted for.....I think I messed up. Should've been head/2x12.

It's a tough choice for me. I like a head/2x12 cab setup, but I'm loving the hell outta my Fender BDRI with the Alnico Gold right now.
