The best SD pickup is...

I've come to the conculsion that the 59 is the best sounding pickup SD makes. It has everything! Open bright tone with bark. I've been listening to all the clips alot and always come back to this pup. There is just something about it...

Re: The best SD pickup is...

I suppose it depends on your tastes. I prefer the Pearly Gates to the 59. However, if you went by shear sales, I'd say that the JB would classify as Seymour's best offering.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

I gotta agree with SFW, the JB has really been the greatest pickup I've ever played, there’s alot of arguments related to how its wired and what pots are used alongside it, but inevitably it sounds amazing however setup.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

Poplar body with maple neck and either ebony or maple fingerboard guitar with jb is the best anything ever IMHO. It's biting and mean with crunch and clarity. Just PERFECT for any sounds with a bit of grit. The feel that it gives to slow bends is just magical!

Re: The best SD pickup is...

To answer the question really depends upon your perspective.

To Seymour I would expect the best PU is the one which has the greatest financial reward for his company.

To a metal player it would be the active with the best output, distortion, clarity, etc.

To a blues guitarist....well, you get the point.

To me, I think the three best SD PUs have already been mentioned...'59, JB, PG.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

I think that the JB is the best pickup duncan ever made, on second place followed by the fullshred and the prails :)

oh, and the '78 :P

Re: The best SD pickup is...

The C5 is my fav bridge pickup. Works in any guitar I've tried it in. Finally found the perfect matching neck pickup...the JB. I keep the JB low with the screw poles up and the 2 pickups match perfectly. Love to hear an underwound JB, think it would be a killer!

I disagree. Considering that his name is on every pickup and he's co-founder of the company, you'd be surprised at how singularly focused he is on tone and quality. Revenue is probably in his Top Five (maybe...), but it's definitely not Number One.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

The 59 is 1 of 2 Duncan Pickups that I really don't like the sound of, so I'll respectively disagree with the OP.

My favourite Duncan pup is the Seth Lover :)

If it doesn't sound good, and if guitarists don't like it, it's not going to sell. Obviously, the PU that sells the best is going to be the one that people like the most (that includes tone, quality, marketing, customer relations, etc).

A company's bottom line is sales and profits. How it gets there is the customer's bottom line. In the end, they have to be one and the same or the result is failure.

Really nothing to disagree about if you know about running a successful business.

Obviously, the best pickup depends on the guitar and amp.

Having said that, I love the BroBucker in most Les Pauls.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

The '59n suits all of my music styles that I play. It's warm and smooth with a beast hidden in it.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

If I had to live the rest of my life playing only one pickup in all my guitars, it would be a JB in the bridge.

Re: The best SD pickup is...

I do believe that the '59's great and is probably their most underrated (especially the bridge pick-up).

Best is subjective and, as been said, depends on the guitar a lot (and amp).

My favorite's the custom for bridge and it's a tight fight between the Seths and PG in the neck... all in one's ear though.
