I have had the blackouts modular preamp for sometime now so I wanted to do a review on it with my pickups hope its helpful for those looking into one.
My guitar: PRS SE Tremonti very similar to a Les Paul
My pickups: Seymour Duncan Invader (Bridge), DiMarzio Axis Custom (Neck)
I have a very basic layout Pickups to BOMP jack so nothing to change the sound too much on the way.
The BOMP is a 25k pot which relies on a 9v battery system for power.
So as an overall the differences I've noticed on installation, the sound of the Invader is cleaner in terms of output on clean which for the Invader is surprising and yet when I turn the drive up I get an incredible boost to the usual output crunch that I'm used to now it still holds the character of the Invader in the bridge its very Metal and now even more powerful than before. Now the neck on clean is warm and clean so it has definitely imparted the blackout cleans onto the tone but when I use drive for solos I get an impressive classic rock solo tone almost close to a slash tone quite fat and round yet also articulate so a nice overall tone there. Now the one thing I really noticed was the lack of hum infact I found it near impossible to find any this was my biggest issue that I wanted this to handle.
Now the cons I noticed were when I used it with my mixer through to guitar rig the input was clipping even with minimal gain on which was surprising because prior to that I could never get it loud enough, however this was also a pain but easily fixed by rolling of the volume for cleans however so that was not so much a pain.
I would certainly buy it again for any other guitars I get it really augments the sound of my pickups and has become characteristically part of my tone as a guitarist so thank you Seymour for this wonderful product.
