the Boss CE-2

I had one given to me for free recently and I'm looking to sell it. Looking at ebay I see them going for a wide range of prices. I've read that the Japanese version is the more sought after version, but I still see the Taiwan made pedals going for around $100 in some cases.

My question: is this pedal really all that great? I played around with it and it sounds like a regular run of the mill chorus pedal to me, but I dont ever use chorus.

Am I stupid to sell it? Anyone want it?

Reverence for the Boss CE-2 stems from the fact that it sounds better than the CE-3 that followed it. Whatever Boss did to split the signal for pseudo-stereo weakened the effect.

If you dislike the pedal, sell it and use the proceeds to fund something that you prefer.

I have four of the Japanese ones. I got my first one when they first came out, way back around 1979/80. That one deteriorated with age. I have fitted them all with the Monte Allum upgrade kits and they sound superb, with a better range of speeds available.

They are a classic in the chorus world, although the very old ones may need work. By today's standards, there may be 'better' chorus pedals, but the CE-2 kinda wrote the book, and then it became the sound of the 80s and overkill saw the chorus become a despised effect.

If you think you would ever use a chorus pedal, it would be worth keeping (and installing the MA mod kit). If you don't think you're going to want chorus, sell it for good money.

The CE-2 is one of my favorites. I've read that David Gilmore still uses one. Nice, organic sounding chorus. Kind of a one trick pony but it's a great trick!

I've been comparing the two for the last couple of months and my conclusion is that the TC makes the Boss sound muddy and not particularly versatile. And the Boss CE-2 makes the TC sound a little bright and sterile.

Comparing the two made me wish the CE-2 sounded a little more like my TC and wish my TC had more of the warmth and organic quality of my CE-2.

They're still my two favorite chorus pedals though.
