the custom is a 14.1K ceramic and the JB is a 16.7K alnico 5
i have heard the JB is not as hot as the custom in output?
through my gear the custom sounds clearer but not really hotter?
the JB seems to be the hotter one, anyone know for sure?

That's my impression too. The Custom has a little more zing on top though.

lew does the customs bigger bass and mids also contribute to the illusion of it being hotter t0 some players?
i have heard many times that of the two(jb+custom) the custom is hotter but i agree with you two guys that it is not in reality

The only way to know is to try them both in the exact same guitar. I've never done that. But I think because of the way we hear that when we compare two audio signals the audio signal that has more treble than the other will usually sound as if it's louder to the human ear. Seymour describes the Custom as having more high end "sizzle". Lew

Well, I have. :)

The JB is hotter, but not tremendously so.

Re: the custom is hotter than the JB?

of course it is!!!

i think the jbs upper mid peak pushes the amp a little harder but actual output is pretty similar

Re: the custom is hotter than the JB?

Mids tend to be the most audible and "powerful sounding" frequency in the mix with a band. So the JB with it's stronger mids comes off as more powerful.

Re: the custom is hotter than the JB?

As clean as the JB sounds I guess I can understand people thinking the Custom is hotter. But it isn't: they're about the same. Customs are wound to 14k typically. JB to 16K.

The magnet affects output, but won't change "hotness" (technically speaking.)
