The Custom

I have a "Custom" (don't know what magnet is in it at the moment), and I liked the original Custom that I traded in my LP so much, I decided to swap this one in there. It sounds a lot better now, but it can't match the original Custom for that guitar. Doesn't the Custom have 3 ceramics, like a DD?

I plan on getting an A8 to try, but I still am going to get another Custom for that guitar. :14:

Just felt like throwing that out there.
Anybody have something similar happen?

Re: The Custom

I haven't experienced this. I've had probably 5 or 6 over the years and they all have the same tonal characteristics and quality from Seymour Duncan.

The stock Custom has one ceramic magnet. Are you saying that two different Customs are sounding different to you? If it is an SH5, they should be very consistent quality and tone wise. Different guitar, amp, etc. can effect the sound and if you have the SH-5 in a new/different guitar that may be why it sounds different. If you don't know if it's an SH-5 or not yank it out and look at the baseplate. SH-14 is the Custom 5 (A5 magnet) and SH-11 is the Custom Custom. (A2 magnet) Maybe you have one of those instead of an SH-5.

Re: The Custom

No, the Custom has one ceramic magnet.

If it doesnt have a ceramic magnet, it could be a Custom Custom or Custom 5, both of which sound quite different to the regular Custom you liked so much.

Re: The Custom

there are these versions of the custom,
A2(sh-11)
A3
A4
A5(sh-14)
A8
ceramic small bar(sh-5)
ceramic large bar

The ones that are for sale by duncan have their model number next to them:)

Re: The Custom

Ok, for some reason, I thought I had read that the Custom had 3 ceramics instead of just one.

I got the current one from IndySG (Ed, he was saying that you had this pickup a while back! it had a cover on it when you got it.) He said it was a Custom Custom. I haven't swapped magnets, so I really don't know what's in this one.

Re: The Custom

Its an A2 in it. Which is why it doesnt sound like your old Custom.

Swap the magnet.

Re: The Custom

Yep, I was going to before I get another one, but I'm still going to get a second Custom, just to have around.

I wonder if it's that there are 3 different magnet options with the different models of Customs that are offered?

but when I opened up a regular Custom, there was just a single ceramic mag in there.
