The First Gibson Humbucker

From the Main Page, here's the very first Gibson humbucker.
proto_hb_w_patent.jpg

When people talk about the "Patent Applied For" pickup, this is the pickup that the patent was drawn from. It was in Seth Lover's personal collection and, after he died, it was willed to Seymour. The drawing in the background is a copy of the patent. This patent was unusual for Gibson because Ted McCarty, then president of Gibson, didn't claim to be the inventor. Seth was listed as inventor.

Note the indentations on the cover. I talked to Seth about that. He told me that the Gibson marketing team said they wanted two rows of adjustable pole pieces and those stamp marks were to indicate where the poles would go. Of course, the final design only had one row of poles.

Also, note the mounting ring made from a Dog Ear P-90 cover.

This pickup will be on display at the Seymour Duncan booth at NAMM in January where we'll pay tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Seth's P.A.F. humbucker. Seth's winding machine and the 1955 Les Paul Test Guitar -- the first Les Paul with humbuckers -- will also be on display, along with the BIG! pickup from The Discovery Channel.

NAMM is closed to the public, but we'll make sure to post lots of photos.

Thanks for the update, Kellie!

Re: The First Gibson Humbucker

Do you guys know how it sounds?

Re: The First Gibson Humbucker

wow

a cool piece of history

I remember seeing Seth Lover walking around one of the vintage guitar shows in L.A. He seemed like such a quiet, unassuming gentleman to me, for someone who's held in such high regard by many in the industry.

One of my friends asked him to sign the back of one of his PAFs. :)

What's even cooler is sometimes I'll take guests on a tour of the factory and we'll stop into Seymour's office and he'll say, "Check this out," reach into a desk drawer and pull out that exact pickup. Folks are always amazed.

He certainly was a gentleman, but he was also a bit of a jokester.

He once told me that when he was born the hospital in Kalamazoo needed to put both his mother's and father's full names on his birth certificate -- but his father wasn't around when they were filling out the certificate. So -- according to Seth -- under "father's name" they just wrote "Lover."

True or not? I don't know. But it's funny. :)

Re: The First Gibson Humbucker

Wow! The Mother of PAF. Us pickup geeks can really appreciate this.

Re: The First Gibson Humbucker

As I recall, the P-90 came just before that pickup in the picture. The P-90 had 5000 turns of 42 ga. wire. When they made the humbucker it was supposed to be a humbucking P-90 (sort of) so Gibson just wound each coil with 2500 turns of 42 ga. wire. 2500 + 2500 = 5000. I think that's right...I'm not a pickup winder but the gist of the story is right.

Very much like a PAF.

Interesting :smack: should have guessed it ... but part of me was hoping it might sound a little different. Hmm I'm a bit bummed out about it ... but it makes sense

Re: The First Gibson Humbucker

Thanks Evan. Very, very cool. Do ya rub it sometimes, just for the MOJO.
I believe I'd probably sleep with that pup. Awesome post! Thanks for sharing.

Peace,

Darrin

I have this vision of the pickup in some old junk drawer with paper clips and thumb tacks sticking to the surface. :laugh2: "Let's see, I know it was here someplace... Hey, guys! Have you seen that $500,000 pickup?"
