The Foundation Tetralogy Prologue: Galactic Entropy Parts I-V (new song)

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
If you have been following the 'mixing in analogue' thread, you know I have spent the past few months writing, recording, and mixing the epic prologue to a 4-part release based on Isaac Asimov's Foundation trilogy.

Hope you like it, it's a pretty spicy meatball in terms of attention span required lol. :)

Lineup is the same as my last album,
Kurt Borst :: vocals
Claire Brock :: drums
myself :: everything else

Recorded in Logic Pro X; hybrid mix of Logic/analog outboard and mixing desk.

GALACTIC ENTROPY PARTS I-V

II.
life - and death
we suspend every breath
light - and shade
all things shall be unmade

ten thousand years
soon disappears
witness the universe slow its turning
galactic entropy

dancing - so entrancing
(even the best song has its end)
bright sun fades colder
(will dead stars ever live again?)

rumination, calculations made
prophesy the ending of time

psychohistory ends the mystery
finds that the truth lives in the lie

light will lead us to life

V.
fading night of the last star's light
blistering it boils away

time stand still
from my windowsill to the void
this final day

without a rhyme or any reason
bloated, it burns away
the final light of completion
into decay

out among the darkness
growing, undetected
dimly in the starshine
frail and unprotected

Terminus they named it
edge of all creation
gathering of knowledge
laying the Foundation

light will lead us to life

Good stuff! That's a fantastic sounding mix. I'm really impressed by the bass sound especially -- is that your mxr bass di? I couldn't really get into the vocal style, but I definitely appreciate the experimental elements of this song. The weird noises starting at 5:44 remind me of something Animal Collective might do between songs. I love the noises that start at 14:00 or so as well, that part is money IMO, and I'd love to sample it with your permission. This is definitely epic as all hell. Takes me back to the days when I'd listen to concept albums start to finish :D

Thank you so much!

It sure is, plus some secret sauce of my own devising. :) That is the last recording I made with my 20+ year old piece 'o junk Squire Bronco bass. I really can't wait to reamp the tracks with my new SUB4!

Thanks. I know this is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. :) The next part of the tetralogy will be much closer to center (for my stuff, at any rate).

You have my permission. Be fruitful and cover the earth. :)

Thanks for taking the time to listen and feedback; I really appreciate it.

That's awesome. I use a squire j-bass myself and would to replace it. I think most bass sounds have some special sauce hehe, but yeah that's miles beyond what I can get running straight into my interface and using modellers.

Nice. Looking forward to it!

Awesome, thank you! I'll let you know if anything cool comes of it :D

Anytime!

Re: The Foundation Tetralogy Prologue: Galactic Entropy Parts I-V (new song)

Would you like to see screen shots of my bass chain?

Re: The Foundation Tetralogy Prologue: Galactic Entropy Parts I-V (new song)

Here ya go :)

The full chain is --

Bass DI: bass > strymon DECO > Golden Age Pre73 > interface

Reamp: bass DI > Radial Pro RMP reamp > MXR bass DI > Pigtronix Philosopher's Stone > interface

That bass track was then multed and separated to separate HIGH BASS and LOW BASS buses.

LOW BASS effects chain:

EQ, Waves Renaissance Bass

BASS HIGH effects chain:

Channel EQ, Waves RS56

Both high and low bass sub-buses are then run into a BASS master bus.

MASTER BUSS effects chain:

Waves Kramer Master Tape, CLA Bass, PiE compressor

That bus was then mixed down to a single stereo stem.

BASS STEM effect chain:

Kramer Master Tape, Channel EQ, PiE compressor, CLA Bass

Re: The Foundation Tetralogy Prologue: Galactic Entropy Parts I-V (new song)

So, besides the Pigtronix, there are 2 more compressors added, 2 instances of CLA Bass, 3 channel EQs, 1 EMI EQ, 2 instances of Kramer Master Tape

Holy Mother of All that is Holy. That's quite the process.

But freaking killer results. I really enjoy the stuff you write. Coming from someone who doesn't listen to anything else like it, I dig this a ton.

At first I didn't think so, but upon looking back ... I guess you are right lol :)

Thanks so much! Thanks for listening and feeding back!

Re: The Foundation Tetralogy Prologue: Galactic Entropy Parts I-V (new song)

Thanks for that. I'm no stranger to stacking comps and eqs but I think it's brilliant the way you created different buses for the lows and highs on the bass -- I'm always fighting with eq trying to get the right balance. Gonna try this method out in the not too distant future for sure.

No problem!

There are lots of ways to skin that particular cat, but using sub-buses works best for me. I may have enough skill and nerve to try multiband compression one day, but so far all of my attempts to use it have resulted in sonic poop. :)

That was pretty cool. Well put together as always. Don't know about all the recording technical stuff....and it's a way more proggy than I'm generally into but I can appreciate it for what it is....

Cool sounding mix too...nice balance/warmth & man (might as well just come out and say it...) I think your guitar tones are almost up there with mine in that last vid I posted :D

High praise indeed! :D
Thanks for listening.

I'm partial to shorter songs but everything sounded perfect

Thanks!
The release after this one has 5 songs and none are longer than 6 minutes. It also has a lot more heavy guitars on it...

Loved it. The bass and synths were beautiful
