The highest output passive pickup?

Re: The highest output passive pickup?

Only way I see to go up on output from a slug is a neo magnet. That or non-standard coil size. Then again, I don't see why you would want to go higher than the slug hardly. (Other than because you can.)

Bareknuckle Warpig, they make it with either a ceramic or an A5, only heard the ceramic, but I guess the A5 is MASSIVE. *wants*

I personally haven't had a DF since around 1996 or so, I don't remember it too well other than it didn't clean up very good and had a buzzy tone, it was in a XPL Explorer I had, I changed it to a Super3, which should be somewhere up high on this list too (forgot that one). I've heard DF's in other guitars that don't sound anything like what mine did (from memory), so I really can't say much about it.

I've got a 1977 Explorer with the "tar back" pickups, those are really hot, not sure what model those actually are however. They used the same epoxy to pot them as my triple rails used.

I want to figure out how to do this... It isn't easy, I can tell you that for sure. However, I picked up one off of ebay fairly cheap a while back so I could mess with one and not be out full price. Now to get time to do it.

Re: The highest output passive pickup?

If I were to do so, I would just order one from the Custom shop. Careful though. The neighborhood dogs might align against you.

Re: The highest output passive pickup?

yeah, its all about how it is measured. I am wondering, short of putting two neos in a slug, (which I will someday figure out how to do) how something could be much hotter than a slug.

I would also doubt that a set from '83 is going to be the highest output yet. there have been a lot of changes in 30+ years.

The more you get into the higher winds which, gives more thickness to the tone, you do lose the high end quite a bit.

Re: The highest output passive pickup?

i don't think there's still a way to make a passive pickup hotter than the slug, nor it will be way in the next 20 years........

My Fireblade 8 is 54k and louder and sharper than the Slug. I have wound higher than that - it's not that difficult.

Not sure SD would do it. The magnets would have to be the right size. Failing that, buy a Slug, push the ceramics out and talk to K&J Magnetics for custom N52 magnets.
