The JB in my G&L Legacy Deluxe sounds a bit too dark: how to solve it?

I can't find a wiring diagram, but one solution might be to change the pots to something with higher values. The single coils might get a bit brighter, but I'm thinking I could live with this as almost always leave strat singles with 250K pots with the tone pot on 10. Maybe a higher value might do the trick?

Raising and lowering the height of the pickup. I've tried this, but not recently. I may try it again. It's certainly the easiest option and it won't cost me anything but time to try it again.

Changing the magnets. I know someone who lives about an hour away who winds pickups. Maybe try it with an A8 to make it brighter and hotter or an A2 to make it less compressed and add some chime. I've never changed mangets in the same pickups, but people seem to claim that this is what will happen.

Any thoughts?

Put a 500k volume, a 500k tone pot for the JB , and a 250k for the singles

I would change the pots as stated before you go messing with magnets. Many times that is all you need.

Hey there. Go with the new pot values.

There's a TON of people here who will disagree with what I'm about to say and I get it, but honestly...if you are going to start swapping magnets, you may as well just get a new pickup.

I don't think you are going to solve your JB problem with a magnet swap either. You need at least a 300K volume pot, or better yet, a 500K on the JB.

The G&L tone controls are the PTB system and very responsive. Try using them. It's 250k volume, 500k treble and 1meg bass.

I wonder if the PTB tone system is puttibg too much load on the JB and muddying it up. Disconnect the tone controls amd cOnnext the JB straight to the output. Faces will melt!

If the JB sounds too dark, you could change the vol pot to 500k or even 1 meg, but it might be easier to turn up the tone control on your amp first. I have found that this sometimes makes a difference in my tone. If this results in the other pups sounding too bright...well, your guitar has a tone control which can be turned down a bit.

The only portion of a PTB circuit that could be the culprit is the T portion, which is just a standard tone control.

You've tried raising & lowering the whole pickup, but have you tried raising just the adjustable poles? Crank 'em up and see if it makes a difference. Only takes a couple of minutes, and if it doesn't do much you can always lower 'em back down.

It’s a dark sounding pickup. That’s because of the amount of wire wound on it. A ceramic magnet might brighten it up a bit due to the lower inductance.

You can also try switching it into parallel.

The JB is my least favorite pickup of all time. Lol
