The length of the string and tension

Hello!
I saw Rig Rundown Richard's Fortus and he said that if strings is longer, has harder tenson, is this true?
If I will install E6 string 0.46 and E1 string 0.46 in strat, and tune up the same, E6 will be softer than E1?

Re: The length of the string and tension

It's tricky. Static tension, not so much. Spring tension aka stretch when you try to bend, yes, longer is more material to strech.

Re: The length of the string and tension

The longer the scale length, the more tension required to tune to pitch.
So a strat at 25.5" scale will always have more string tension than say a Les Paul at 24.75" with same string gauge and tuning.

Re: The length of the string and tension

The string length outside the scale length, such as the string between the nut and tuner, does not increase the amount of tension to tune. I've measured with a digital tension meter. It actually has the opposite effect. Because although the tension is only dictated by the scale length, the high e on a fender headstock has more string that can stretch and so will feel slinkier.

Re: The length of the string and tension

All my electrics have 9-42 daddario sets
The 24.75 LP s are much easier to fret than the 25.5 Ibanez

My Martin has a 25.6 scale
And my Epi Hummingbird has a 24.75
Again the Epi is noticeably softer fretting

Re: The length of the string and tension

The total string length (regardless of scale length) is what affects how easy it is to bend a note.

Take an extreme example: if the total length was 10 inches and you want to bend the string 1 inch, you'd have to stretch the string 10% (approximately...you'd need to use a little geometry to be precise). This would be next to impossible, at least for my fingers.

However, if the string were 100" and you tried to bend it 1" you'd only need to stretch the string 1%. That would be a piece of cake, even for my feeble fingers.

Re: The length of the string and tension

I mean if the length outside the nut and the bridge has an affects the tension?
Richard Fortus said that he like revese headstock, because the lenght of the string between nut and tuning keys is longer on bass side and tension on the bass strings is stronger
Thanks GuitarDoc and Clint 55, that's what I meant.
However, I prefer a standard fender headstock, I like when bass strings are stronger and trebble strings are softer to better bend.
And a prefer stronger bass strings because they can be not in tune when I pick strong, especially E6 string

Re: The length of the string and tension

On a guitar with a non-locking nut the extra length gained (on the low string) behind the nut with a reverse headstock would not help notes stay true with hard playing, in fact if there was any effect on tuning stability it would be a negative effect due to the extra "stretch-potential".

You'd have to be attacking the heck out of it to make any difference, if it would at all, but if it did then standard downward head would be better.
Only when bending should there be any difference from the behind-the-nut distance.

Re: The length of the string and tension

Evidence of the bendiness is playing a Jazzmaster- easier to bend, but not as much effect per bend distance on pitch as say a Strat.

F in this case is tension of the string ( the higher the force the higher the frequency)
Mu is the mass per unit length so essentially the gauge (the thicker the gauge the lower the pitch if the force doesn’t change)
L is the length (the longer the string the lower the pitch is F & Mu remain the same)

He's incorrect.

Re: The length of the string and tension

Neither the tension of the tuned string, nor the feel will be stiffer.

If he's comparing 2 different guitars, then the setup of the reverse one has been very poorly done if the longer string feels stiffer

Re: The length of the string and tension

I have one question. What do you think about balanced tenson strings? D"Addario has these.

Re: The length of the string and tension

Pretty good. I get custom sets tho where I balance the treble strings to each other and balance the bass strings to each other but bumped up a couple lbs from the treble strings.

Something like 10-13.5-17-26-36-50?

Re: The length of the string and tension

Yep! 10,13.5,17,28,38,52. I think the gauges you listed would be really good too.

Re: The length of the string and tension

I prefer prefer slinky treble strings and tighter bass strings personally so multiscale is pretty cool as long as it isn’t crazy wide.
