The most useful exercises you came across

many of us have gone to a lot of teachers, music schools, etc
most of the drills and exercises just fade away with time as soon as we progress, but theres a few of them, very few, that stick with you trough the years and really help you develop musical skills

they can be guitar technique drills, or any other kind of musical drill, like singing scale notes or whatever

contribute to the world!!!

=D:kabong:

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

Honnestly, the thing that has helped me the most is hammer on/ pull off drills that consist of playing them over and over again until you get a clear note as fast as you can.

I find that this increases your speed, finger strengh, and you attack technique on the string.

I dunno, I found it usefull for me....

To help my ear, I put itunes on random and try to play along with whatever comes on. If I don't know the song, the idea is to determine the key it's in and what scales/modes will work within it.

i do that too, it really helps me with phrasing and such.

i do scale exercises...intervals and such

running up each mode in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, etc

then building up to something like 1, 4, 7 or something like that. i think you get the picture

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

Buy the "Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns" by Nicholas Slonimsky and start at the beginning...should take about 10 years to work through that.

anything else? cmon i bet theres a lot of you who have something in mind but are just lazy to post it =)

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

I used to practice downstroking with a metronome. Start at a slow warm-up speed then gradually increase the intervals. Often I'd be playing the Master of Puppets riff.

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

I've found Yngwie licks can do some pretty good stuff for alternate picking.
From his licks, make your own up in different key signatures etc.

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

practice with a metronome...a lot. whatever you do...make sure you do it ascending and descending. if you don't, all of your solos will just be one way...whichever way you practice more

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

Play triads with a metronome. Musical but it gets the practice in.

Re: The most useful exercises you came across

playing bass!

or opening your musical mind - stevie wonder is a staple diet when i feel im in a rut. if you only listen to metal or only listen to blues, your playing is going to literally be running through the same old crap!
