The New PRS Custom 24, a touch of Godin

PRS have redesigned the wiring of the Custom 24. Firstly it moves to a blade switch rather than the rotary and the selections are different. In fact they are identical to the selections used by Godin on two HB guitars between 1994 and 2000 which gives you back to front. Bridge humbucker, Bridge Humbucker and inner coil of neck pickup, Both humbuckers, Inner coil of neck Humbucker and Neck Humbucker.
I think it loses a lot more than it gains in terms of Fendery sounds but has some good points. Although I like the rotary.

Although the more interesting new PRS is the Signature which has eight tones and so on but it is a high priced limited edition at the moment but these things do filter down.

Not too sure on Dweezil's new guitar though.

However this one looks sweet.

Re: The New PRS Custom 24, a touch of Godin

As a PRS Custom owner of almost fifteen years, I have to say that, IMO, the inside coil and outside coil combinations on the five-way rotary selector do not sound particularly Fendery anyway.

Dweezil's PS model looks like half of a double neck on which the second neck should have been a mandolin. (THINK: Manson Guitars John Paul Jones specials.)

The eight sound PU selection idea seems interesting. :scratchch

The outside sounds give you a Tele sound which can be useful.

If the 5 way knife switch is the same dimensions as a Fender, you could replace it with a megaswitch and get the original PRS sounds.

PRS has also changed the pickups on the Custom to a much lower output set. The trend with PRS now isto use lower output pickups which offer greater clarity.

I'm still hoping to get one with a rotary as I wouldn't be able to afford a new one. It's not that much of a surprise when ever I save up for something it gets discontinued PRS have even stopped my favourite colour in the new order.
Lower output can be better for a lot of things.

Re: The New PRS Custom 24, a touch of Godin

Now THAT is a PRS I could get close to! I used to have a pair of Custom 24s in the late '90s, but HATED that stupid rotary switch and the stock VB and HFS pickups. I swore if I ever owned another, I'd tear-out those pups, replace with JB/59, tear-out the rotary, replace with 3-way toggle, and put a push-pull tone pot in there. But I prefer the blade switch. May have to have one of those one day...
