The nucleas of a new DoB song - if you're interested

So I just finished this up yesterday.

I thought I'd share my method for composing music for Devils of Belgrade in its earliest stages... these are what my demos sound like. My plan is for this tune to be one of the faster, heavier songs on the next record.

It used to be that I'd record bass and program drums to everything as well, but that was 2008 and we were still forming up our sound. Now that's unnecessary - I leave and trust the bass and drum concepts to Marshall and Todd.. They've yet to disappoint.

Honestly, I'd leave the 2nd-guitar parts out as well if I could - Hatchet is certainly capable of writing them - but most of my ideas are pinned on some kind of interplay between guitar parts so my hands are somewhat tied there.

This is presented warts and all - bad edits and sloppy playing - but this is what I will play for the guys at the next band practice so they can hear it and we'll take it from there. I've spared you the incessant metronome track at 215 bpm, but I'll turn it on for the guys so they can get some context of meter.

I have more of these, too. If anybody is interested in hearing them, I'll post some more.

Nice thrashy as fu**

Thanks!

The 3rd DoB album is shaping up to be more melodic, perhaps more "ponderous" than our first two. I've been trying to shift to a more lyrical form of lead playing, and doing so over larger portions of the songs, than previously. Not in a solo-guitar-instrumental kind of way, as much as I'm trying to write the music around memorable melodies and themes so that they come across a bit less like "riff salad."

But not with this song. ;)

I wrote this one to be a face-melter as a Track #2 candidate or to kick off the 2nd side of the record with some gusto. Glad to know I might be hitting the mark!

very nice man. heavy and melodic. cant wait to hear the track flushed out with a rhythm section!

Man, your style is so, so distinct.

Little vibratos at the end of note runs.

Love two-note dissonant hangers (1:02, 1:11) near the beginning, I used to use those a lot to great effect.

I also like the part where one guitar part is riding along and the other part goes "chunk-STOP-chunk-STOP-chunk" to punctuate it (1:12).

I used to use that move a lot too, also to great effect.

I always love your songs - they feel like 4 or 5 songs in one.

1) What guitar(s) are we hearing?
2) What amplification are we hearing?
3) How did you record this?

Thanks Hunter!

The guitar used for this was my new (to me) Hamer Special FM with a '59/JB combination. First thing I've written with it. A very 'metal-friendly' guitar, kind of surprisingly.

Signal chain was my trusty and ever-underwhelming guitar -> PODxt -> Adobe Audition setup. It's to the point now with that thing that I only use one patch - my tweaked boosted Marshall Plexi sound - and I don't even know if the knobs to change patches work anymore.

I need a new modeler or front-end one of these days. The problem is that I'd never use all the stuff a POD HD or Axe FX can do and I couldn't justify the cost.

Whatever that harmonized coked-up tapping part was...I need a new set of pants now.

Re: The nucleas of a new DoB song - if you're interested

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback.

Should I post a few more demos?

Re: The nucleas of a new DoB song - if you're interested

I've been listening to the first two DoB albums almost nonstop for a while, and it's cool to listen to one writer of the band's demo... and it's a very familiar sound! That vibrato, the singing quality to some leads.

This shows you also that tone is in the fingers. Oktoberfist was a Tele right and real amps right? This was a Hamer with hot pickups and a Pod and still sounds great and like DoB.

YES, please post more! I'm excited as a fat kid at a buffet to listen to more!

Kay then, here's another one!

This one we're currently fumbling through and playing quite poorly at band practice! I'm sure it'll come together soon, though.

This was was recorded with my AVRI '52 Tele with the Zhangbucker Super Paul Bunyan in the bridge. The solo at the end is the Seymourized Minibucker in the neck position of the Tele.

There's a lot of slop in the recording but I hope it doesn't detract too much.

Re: The nucleas of a new DoB song - if you're interested

really awesome!! the first was nice and chunky, and the second was very melodic, a bit like a velvet revolver song but progressive rock, or somethin :)

Thanks dudes.. this is as raw/exposed as it gets with my playing so i definitely appreciate the positive feedback.

Man, I really hope your drummer can groove, cause these songs remind me sooo much of Testament at their best. :)

Re: The nucleas of a new DoB song - if you're interested

that was cool. i liked how it sounded like the two guitars were panning at around 1.15
