Hi folks — we're going to be tackling the eternally compelling Jimmy Page wiring scheme over at tonefiend.com. We'll look at both the classic arrangement, and the even-more-over-the-top version with a pair of Duncan Triple Shot Mounting Rings.

If you've been wanting to try this, please join us. And if you've mastered this project, well, we first-timers would love to hear about your experiences, good and bad.

The goal, BTW, isn't so much to clone Pagey as to explore all those arcance alternative humbucker wiring schemes. Deviance is definitely encouraged. :)

Re: The Pagey Project at tonefiend.com

I've just posted a video demo and tech notes on the Jimmy Page wiring at tonefiend.com.

In this first phase of the project, I've set up a Les Paul with the original Jimmy Page wiring using four push/pull pots and a pair of ’59 Model pickups. (In an upcoming post, I'll explore how much further I can take it using push/pulls and Triple Shot Mounting Rings.)

This is the first time I've tried this setup, and a encountered some surprises. First, it wasn't as difficult as anticipated! Second, I was startled by how good the ’59s sound in single-coil mode. Third, the ergonomics aren't as overwhelming as you might assume — it's easy to imagine becoming fluent at tweaking all those sounds on the fly.

Also, I have a suspicion that the out-of-phase sounds are a little more gratifying than they might be had I used a higher-output bridge pickup, like, say, a JB. Anyone have any experience with this?

Just one thing: Why are all these kids on my lawn?

Re: The Pagey Project at tonefiend.com

the phase thing works best if you roll on pups volume back a little compared to the other. its an interesting tone but not one i care for all that much.

as far as using a hotter pup in the bridge it changes things quite a bit, better or worse is up to you
