I am your doctor of love!
Lot's of discussion about the PG. This poll is certainly not ALL inclusive, but I really want to get a look at the tonal terrain of opinion.

I'd like AS MANY to answer as possible! If you haven't used it, there is an option, please be honest.

I realize this isn't the MOST scientific version I can do. Maybe I'll do a serious and put some charts and graphs up.

* If you have a LOVE/HATE…select the Love/ok or the HATE/ok depending on if the Love or Hate is stronger.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

I think the 'hate' thing is a bit strong and will distort the results, and not really give you what you're looking for. I don't think many people 'hate' them at all, but there's certainly guys that prefer other PAF's instead. There should be a couple options for something in between, like: 'it's overrated' and 'it's okay, but there's better Duncan PAF's'. This isn't a black and white thing. There's shades of grey. Players that don't particularly care for it are likely to choose 'it's good' or 'it depends', rather than say they 'hate' it. We have a thread where 4 guys said they don't care for PG's; I don't expect any of them to say they hate it, or it's 'one of Duncan's worst.' I'd rather not vote than have to squeeze into one of the above categories.

Also: There's some value in getting votes from people who 'don't know and never had one?' How about if they sit this one out and don't vote at all if that's all they have to say on the subject?

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

Can't just answer the question as presented, can you?

Not even a simple 'I voted [blank], however…' response, or a "To answer the OP directly."

I find you criticisms of the poll itself interesting. I am close to throwing down credentials….

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

Invalid poll. No Rob Option.

Also, where are all of the mag swap variations? :scratchch

You want to know what people think of PG's, and there's not an option for some of us. You're not going to get what you want from this poll as it stands now. I'm trying to help you out. You can take this as constructive, or you can get huffy.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

I voted its one of seymours best but with the caveat that for me its pretty guitar dependent... In the right guitar its gold.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

Just like all pickups it will work in some application better than others. I have used them and its kind of a specialized pickup not for everybody or everything. It has more attitude, and output, and cut, than the average PAF. Actually I have had good luck when using them in superstrats as long I used 250k pots. I worked on a superstrat for guy who was a shredder and we couldn't get any all white humbuckers locally. He wanted white Evos. I had a white PGb on hand, not a PG+, but a regular A2 one. So we put it in as a stop gap until we could order the ones he wanted. It would cut your head off with 500k pots, but after I changed the pots to 250k he loved it for shred. He would not give it back!

I have a Les Paul on the bench right now that a set of PGs would probably help wake up, at least in the bridge position. That's not always the case.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

I love pearlys, great pups. 500k pots all around thru fender amps

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

Love 'em. Best hot PAF-style pickup from Duncan or DiMarzio IMO. And with 1M pots, they're even better than normal.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

I have only tried the PGB. I had one for years and I wasn't completely sold on it. It was too bright and raspy for my tastes. I also disliked the loose bass and midrange response of the A2 magnet.

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

Put me down for "it depends".

I had a BC Rich Warlock with a set and it absolutely killed for black metal.

I may need to try one again sometime.

Pearly Gates for black metal? But only if mediated through a warlock? Sorry, the name + genre stereotypes I find vaguely hillarious here. Was that guitar named heaven and hell?

I have not ever had PGs, but I think I would like them. They never were a set I gravitated towards, and I never found a set of cheap used ones. (How I usually try unfamilliar sds.)

Re: The Pearly Gates Poll

I have a PGn neck paired up with a P-rails in my Strat. I would say that neck position is one of my favorite neck tones for jazz and blues. Very round and dark (like me). I have yet to play the PGb and would love to give it a whirl. However, so many pickups so few guitars.

I have been doing 80's metal with a set for a while and REALLY loving them for it. Neck and bridge. CAn TOTALLY cop CC Devilles greatest tones AND some DeMartini with the right delay!
