THE Pick of the 80's

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

I would think the Celluloid Fender Medium was the pick of the 80s but that is around when I switched over to Tortex.

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

The one pick I remember making a big impact back then was the original Dunlop Jazz series.
There was something about the feel that I miss in today's version; it was more 'rubbery' feeling.
A slightly softer attack, but it wasn't scared of rapid arpeggios.

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

I remember a lot of plastic and celluloid in the old standard plectrum shape. Tortex was probably the picks players didn't share though. Whatever it was, it was dayglo colored.

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

in those days, I was using the little teardrop celluloid picks medium gauge, then later went to thin tortex, using one of the blunt edges.

Now on EJ Jazz III's. I don't really care about thickness as long as there is sufficient stiffness (That's what she said)....
Still have some of the little celluloid picks left - they are still nice for a change of pace.

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

Thanks guys.

I'm thinking about 80's hard rock and hair metal

For hair metal, stainless steel picks were pretty popular for a period of time. Warren DeMartini, for example, used them, as did many others in the genre.

Beyond that, Fender mediums (tort) were pretty common.

Whats changed since? Did celluloid get scrapped for being a fire hazard?

And what are today's non-tort picks made of?

Re: THE Pick of the 80's

I don't think celluloid picks are as durable as Tortex or nylon. Back in those days, I wore out picks pretty fast, though I played thinner picks than I do today. Stainless steel picks are very bright-sounding, and I really love using them under heavy distortion.

Pick technology is just one small example of how good we guitarists have things today.

Once I started tremelo picking those Fender picks felt like they were melting into my strings. I soon switched to Mind Picks made out of petrified wood and then moved onto tortex. I now use a variety of picks but 90% of the time I use Brossard horn or bone picks.
